On the one hand I understand what he's saying about VAT registration etc, but surely a non-VAT registered company will not be able to claim the VAT back which will kill the margins.....

I don't think it's a genuine advert, he basically admits to trying to sell a failing business.

If it is a genuine advertisement, he must be bonkers telling the world his troubles...

Not being registered for VAT limits turnover to £79k (currently), so not much room to grow from their advertised £50k turnover before it's mandatory anyway  Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

With the exception of stuff like exhaust, brake pads etc. the mark-up isn't likely to average more than around 20% on a good day.

Given a £50k turnover and that his supplier seems to wholesale and ship direct based on his orders this business is unlikely to be showing a gross profit of say £8-£10k not much wriggle room for a wage or overheads until it hits a turnover well above the VAT threshold. If he is buying the parts then of course there will be a gain because of the VAT reclaimed on his inputs.

Needs at least a 4-fold growth then only to give some-one the average wage.
