TDV6 alternator replacement

The alternator has died on my 2005 RRS. I have arranged supply of a new unit, but looking at the job, access is a bit tricky.

Has anyone done one of these before?

Do you attack it from above, removing the fan shield and intercooler trunking? or do you go in from below after removing the engine shields?

I am just hoping somebody else`s experience will save me time.

Thank you
Adam..

Hi Adam,

I had mine go on my TDV6 Disco,

from the top chap, its fairly straightforward as long as you can get your fan off.

It requires a special tool to hold in place while you tap off the nut counter clockwise.

Once that's off just slip off the drive belt (and maybe replace while your there) and swap out alternators.

An hour tops if the fan comes off.

Mine didn't and was a nightmare.

Best of luck.

Dave

Thanks Dave. Viscous fans are usually LH thread, so i was prepared for that. I have the new unit now, so i just need to fathom my route in to remove the old one. Smile

Access around the V6 engine is a bit of a challenge!!

Thanks. I am planning to tackle it next week and may have to improvise on the special spanner front. If I get stuck I will have to let you know.

This is the how to guide from the Disco 3 forum.

It should help.

Thank you Dave. I feel much better about it having seen those photos.

I will report back next week on progress. Should be tackling it on Tuesday.

Thanks again

Well, I am delighted to report that Black Bess now has a brand new alternator fitted and she is returned to normal.

Thank you Big Dave, for pointing out the technical guidance, it was very helpful. I managed to get the fan hub off without the special holding tool, but I must say, I am going to buy one, since I need to do the cam belts shortly and it will be so much easier with the tool.

Altogether, it took a couple of hours yesterday, which included faffing around with the fan hub and fetching tools from my shed, so it could be done much faster.

I was worried about access, but it is pretty easy once the fan shroud is out of the way, and I like the belt tensioner set-up; very good.

I still have a problem with the sun roof drain pipe on the driver`s side wetting the carpet (at least I am convinced that this is the cause), so that is my next job on the car.

Cheers
Adam..
