I have spent a lot of time in the Baltics, Scandinavia and Russia. In Estonia and Sweden for example, headlights are usual all year round, but only enforced in autumn and winter. On murky days, it actually does help.

More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime_running_lamp#Scandinavia

Its easier for manufacturers to supply cars that adhere to all regs (or exceed them) in the markets they are sold. Hence stuff that sells well in Russia, Scandinavia and the Baltics come with day lights as standard.

Remember, the UK is a very small market in Europe really. We already demand the steering wheel on the other side. That is expense enough I suppose.

Since DRL's started appearing on vehicles, ive seen more cars driving around in the dark or heavy rain with just the DRL's on so no lights lit on the rear. Shocked It might solve one problem on the front of a car but causing another serious problem at the rear. Whistle

Very good points...my rants on the pointlessness of DRL's are already listed here! Mike

People, it's DRLs not DRL's. Rolling Eyes 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

And just to illustrate perfectly the point made in my original post:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motori...qus_thread

Recommend you do not watch this video as it is a couple of minutes of your life you'll never get back.

But the Telegraph reader's disparaging comments are priceless. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

^^^ Hear, hear -Totally agree with Paddi's OP.

The added problem is that 'motoring articles will only be read by the converted who already know most of the bland S***t written _ the rest of the T**ds on the road probably can't read and think their indicators and fog lights are Christmas decorations. Twisted Evil

Something else to add to the "grinds my gears" list - people driving along on unlit roads without main beams on. You follow along and they're doing 60mph on an unlit road on dipped beams - dipped beams that often seem to be set up as fog lights because they send so little light forwards along the road. How/why do they do this? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Why is it since new cars have DRLs fitted, that everyone without DRLs think it is now ok to drive around with their front fog lights on. Banging Head

In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

Seems everyone has forgotten about this part of the highway code too Twisted Evil does my head in sat at traffic lights......

Also I thought that in traffic the highway code used to stipulate that unless you are the front or rear car fogs should be off????

Couldn't find it though??

P.S. great thread Paddi. I feel ready to start my day now the rant is over Very Happy 2011 Autobiography Santorini Black

On the rare occasions that it's thick enough to need fog lights, I turn them off if someone comes up behind me. I guess most people are too busy picking their noses to look in the mirror and think "don't rear fog as there's a car behind now" Censored 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

i use my rear fogs in fog but turn off as soon as a car comes behind me, it does my head in following someone who leaves their rear fogs on when ive caught them up just to dazzle me, also many people use them in rain on a motorway when you can see for miles past them....why....

Hmmm not sure about the turning off the fog lights policy. I tend to leave them on the grounds that the following driver is too close if in thick fog my rears are dazzling him and he'll probably drop back to more sensible distance.

How about this one as a favourite gripe? On any longish motorway journey in wet weather you will inevitably see at least one car with every single window completely steamed up and running with condensation to the point where the driver obviously can't see where she is going and is usually crawling along in the middle lane causing a tailback miles long as everyone else has to slow down and filter into lane three to get past.

I'm guessing the reason for this is the sheer stupidity of some people who don't understand how to operate the vehicle's ventilation system and have got everything closed and fans off.

Saw one of these on Saturday and her vision was so restricted she drifted across the lane and would have collided with me had I not taken evasive action. Must get myself a Blackvue. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

People who sit in the outside overtaking lane when they are not overtaking anything.

People who leave the full beam on when your driving towards them.
