I have spent a lot of time in the Baltics, Scandinavia and Russia. In Estonia and Sweden for example, headlights are usual all year round, but only enforced in autumn and winter. On murky days, it actually does help. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime_running_lamp#Scandinavia Its easier for manufacturers to supply cars that adhere to all regs (or exceed them) in the markets they are sold. Hence stuff that sells well in Russia, Scandinavia and the Baltics come with day lights as standard. Remember, the UK is a very small market in Europe really. We already demand the steering wheel on the other side. That is expense enough I suppose. |

No one will ever convince me DRL's are a good idea. Mike

Very good points...my rants on the pointlessness of DRL's are already listed here! Mike

People, it's DRLs not DRL's. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Something else to add to the "grinds my gears" list - people driving along on unlit roads without main beams on. You follow along and they're doing 60mph on an unlit road on dipped beams - dipped beams that often seem to be set up as fog lights because they send so little light forwards along the road. How/why do they do this? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Why is it since new cars have DRLs fitted, that everyone without DRLs think it is now ok to drive around with their front fog lights on. |

In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

On the rare occasions that it's thick enough to need fog lights, I turn them off if someone comes up behind me. I guess most people are too busy picking their noses to look in the mirror and think "don't rear fog as there's a car behind now" 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

i use my rear fogs in fog but turn off as soon as a car comes behind me, it does my head in following someone who leaves their rear fogs on when ive caught them up just to dazzle me, also many people use them in rain on a motorway when you can see for miles past them....why.... |

Hmmm not sure about the turning off the fog lights policy. I tend to leave them on the grounds that the following driver is too close if in thick fog my rears are dazzling him and he'll probably drop back to more sensible distance.
