NEED HELP PLEASE... Gearbox / transmission noise !?

Hello,

I got two problems with my RRS TDV6 2005. Still nobody (Land Rover Dealers Netherlands) can help me out Sad

The first one is a 'rasping' noise when i take my foot of the gaspedal. It is always there.
On Range Rover net i found a simular story, but no solution. Does anybody know what it is and hopefully a has fix for it ??

Gearbox/Transmission Noise
On early production models I started hearing reports of a rattle that seems to come from the rear of the gearbox. In one case the entire engine was replaced, and the owner heard there were 35 other Sports in Europe with this problem at the time (late 2005).

During 2006, some owners of the mechanically-identical RR Sport and Discovery 3 / LR3 have been experiencing this or a similar transmission noise. For example, one owner reports that in May 2006 his started making a “chain or rasping sound” from underneath the car just after taking his foot off the gas pedal. The dealer said they had a software fix for it as it was a noise happening in third gear. Unfortunately, the noise was actually in all the gears at various speeds, and the software fix did not work. On a test drive with the area Land Rover technical support representative and a representative from ZIFF transmissions, after initial denials they confessed that they knew about this noise problem and that ZIFF transmissions were working on a fix. As the owner said, "More and more customers are coming in with this problem and it appears to have happened after we all had a “software upgrade”. In fact, Land Rover have told me that the new RRS and Land Rover D3 are now coming out of the factories making this noise (obviously because they have the latest software loaded on them). We are told that the noise is not damaging the car (though they do not know what the noise actually is, but suspect it is coming from the transfer box) and that ZF are working on a fix for it. The only solution for it at the moment is to turn up your stereo, air-con and keep the windows up as you probably will not hear it!!"

Update February 2007: Another owner experiencing this problem described it as a "rasp" noise during and after acceleration. The dealer admitted that most Sports have this problem and that ZF is still working on a fix. It is thought to be a hydraulic clutch problem and it is not yet clear whether it will be a parts or software update that is needed to fix it.

Update January 2010: Calin of Rumania reports this problem on his 2005 RR Sport. "I HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM, THAT NOISE LIKE A RATTLE, coming from the gearbox, after the engine is warm. The noise is not continuous, but keeps coming and going when I lift my foot from the accelerator.
[/i]

The second strange problem there is is that the car is steering heavy .
Not on the highway, but on parkinglots, or roundabouts.. slow driving/steering.. it feels not good.
I change the wheels, 20" for 19".. no result.

The garage change and fresh the steering oil, change some sensors... nothing happend, still the same problem..

Hope you can help me out with these strange problems...

Thank you very much. Thumbs Up

Sounds very similar to the noise I had in my Sport after the monkey who replaced the engine forgot to do up the bolts on the torque converter. Thumbs Up heavy steering won't come from wheel size, never noticed a change from 20-22 wheels but a pump or rack problem could have similar symptoms. Worth getting the centre prop shaft bearing checked, have replaced several on D3's of similar age. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

The rasping noise could be due to belt tensioner, sometimes makes strange noises at higher speeds, also could contribute to the heavy steering. I had intermittant heavy steering on my sc. I had the aux belts changed as part of the service and steering has been perfect ever since.

thanks for the answers for so far..

the rasping noise is when i hit and lift my foot slowely from the gaspedal... typical by trafic jams.

and the heavy steering advice from simpel1, i will ask the garage ..

But the advice was, flush gearbox, new oil there, new oil there, filtes, large service etc..etc... and som other faults... 3300 euro !! and the heavy steering and noise are still there... easy advice and money i guess... Sad.. so now i'm looking for knwoledge over seas , where the car is from Wink

One of our expert contributors has previously advised that stiff steering is frequently caused by a partially seized lower universal joint in the steering column and the fix is to change for a new part at a cost of approx Ł60. Worth investigating?

Can't help further with the rasping noise except to say that haven't heard of it being cured by a gearbox flush. A flush can cure many problems but mostly of the poor shifting variety. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
