Sounds very similar to the noise I had in my Sport after the monkey who replaced the engine forgot to do up the bolts on the torque converter. heavy steering won't come from wheel size, never noticed a change from 20-22 wheels but a pump or rack problem could have similar symptoms. Worth getting the centre prop shaft bearing checked, have replaced several on D3's of similar age. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

The rasping noise could be due to belt tensioner, sometimes makes strange noises at higher speeds, also could contribute to the heavy steering. I had intermittant heavy steering on my sc. I had the aux belts changed as part of the service and steering has been perfect ever since. |

One of our expert contributors has previously advised that stiff steering is frequently caused by a partially seized lower universal joint in the steering column and the fix is to change for a new part at a cost of approx Ł60. Worth investigating?
