PLEEEEEASE HELP RRS SUDDEN DEATH!

hello all

please help as the AA man couldnt,
keep it short, rrs 2006 tdv6, which weve had for 2 years now wiith no problems other than the usual running cost tyres brake and fuel,,
she was going to work on a misserable morning and the battery light came on and off a few times, gets to work ok and then on returning home the battery light came on then stopped on but she continued to drive home but then the car suddenly died of death with nothing on just stopped dead, she coudnt even put on the hazards to worn other drivers that shed broken down,
she tryed to start the car but it was like the battery was disconnected so there was nothing, ,

anyway, out come the AA man after waitnig 30 mins which was shockinly quick he then asked the wife what the problem was she explained and then he done like any other mechanic would do,, and guess what Big Cry the bloody thing started with no battery light on and he checked the cables on the battery and said everthing was ok, so he went off,
the wife returns on her journey home with no problems,
but now she refues to drive it as the problem could of been fatal if shed been on the motorway at speed,
as the AA man could find anthing what do we do, we dont want to get rid because we would be passing on the problem to someone else,,

so please tell me if this has happened to others or can someone shed some light as to what it may be as we do not want to send it in to land rover and get charged lots of money just to tell us its ok with no fault fount,,

merry christmas and hope to here from you soon,

regards theforman

What tests did the AA guy do?

Im sure there has been a case of the car totally dying before, but before we go into battery, alternator, fault codes etc - its worthwhile knowing what the AA guy did and checked Mike

thankx for the quick response, we had a new battery two months ago and i checked that the battery was good and checked voltage yesterday and the voltage on the red battery wire was reading 14.2 with a load on,
surrely could it be the alternator?
could this cause the motor to die and then mirraculasly start up when she broke down..??

i should mention its done 141500 miles so a assume ys the original alternator

So many things could cause the car to stop, its difficult.

Are you saying when it dies, you tried to turn it on and nothing worked, no lights, nothing - as if there was no power at all?

The battery light coming on and some symptoms sound like the alternator, but there could be other things Mike

Agree it could be something to do with a failing alternator but you could try some simpler things first.

If interpreting the symptoms correctly it is intermittent complete electrical failure? That suggests a loose/corroded positive battery cable giving high resistance. The most exposed to the elements part is the end that connects to the alternator so maybe start looking there. Was weather wet when the incident occurred?

Was reading recently about a similar problem (but not quite the same with some Porsche 996 models). Even though the connection to the alternator looks sound there may be a few centimetres of the cable that have corroded and causing the high resistance. Cure would be to replace the whole cable which probably comes as a complete assembly/harness.

Might also be worth checking the more easily accessible positive lead from battery to battery junction box (the rectangular box next to the battery with fuses and relays in it) perhaps a problem here would cause the car to shut down?

Should be relatively easy to track down as there can't be many connections that shut off all power which is what I think your better half was describing. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

it only died the once, battery light came on the way to work and on the way home from work but then she came to a t juncton to turn rght, within a splitt second pulling off it cut out, everything went off, no power nothing, she did try a few attempts to start but there were no ignition lights and couldnt even put on the hazards, AA man looked under bonnet di nothing then he turned the key and then it started he was confused as we were, he couldnt see a fault, anyway he sent her on her journey home wthout any problems
its just so strange i have read on these rr forums and a few have related this as faulty diodes or some sort in the alternator,

i just want a bit more clue on this before i buy a new alternator

Correct me if I am wrong but if the car stops for whatever reason & is left in `D` does that not cut out all power ? Im away from the Sport at the moment so can not confirm - but Mrs Peach has called me once or twice to say the cars dead - wont start -it has been left in `D` or `R `. I appreciate this does not solve the original problem but we all panic when the motor suddenly chimes or flashes up a fault.
Again please correct me if I have got it wrong Sad just trying to help. 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

I agree. If the car was left in D and the AA man moves it to P then tries starting it, that would explain how it then worked for him. But not why it stopped in the first place! I would say poss alternator... 2013 RRS SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

That would only stop it from starting, you would still get ign lights and hazards would always work.

My money is also on an alternator and if you believe that it will fix itself, it won't, only next time it will also fry your battery.

The elements inside an alternator can work intermittently and unless you have a really poor earth or battery connections, alternator is the only way to go. Bodsys Brake Bible

I had a similar issue after changing the battery and the car was completely dead. Turned out that although the terminals on the battery were tightened, the positive wasn't pushed down far enough. A gentle knock with a hammer and all was well. Worth a go

If it was the alternator, then the battery would run itself down to nothing, it would not restart, im betting loose terminal.
