Right guys I need a push in the right direction here. I've seen this 58 plate factory HST from LR dealer with 40k on the clock at £29k, seems right at the top end of price but it comes with 1yr LR warranty and mileage is low. First owner was a LR dealer and then it was registered to a company as a second owner. Do you think it was a demo car and will the dealer have looked after it or had the sales guys riding it hard? My alternative is getting a private HSE for around £22-25k and getting a medusa AB kit which I think look pretty smart but I guess I would be without a warranty and trusting the seller. The LR warranty is very tempting given some of the notorious problems these can produce....very torn on a decision here...I might take a look at the HST in the flesh at the weekend

Dealers very often register cars in their own names to boost the sales figures so the situation you describe is not uncommon and doesn't mean that the car was ever used as a demo vehicle.

That's the answer I was looking for Paddi and totally agree I just needed to hear it from someone else! Going to view it tomorrow morning. Are they a good dealer, it's your local isn't it? |

Lancaster are the nearest LR dealer to me but I have only ever bought spare parts from them (I do all my own servicing as far as possible). I called their service department a couple of times but didn't find them all that helpful so went elsewhere for a diagnostic check when I needed one.

I'm planning on checking if bushes have been replaced, drive slow and sharp turn left to right to listen for knocks, ask if alternator has been replaced, check gear changes in sport mode, check the car goes up and down in access mode etc without faults on the dash, press every electrical button I can find, check smoke on start up...anything else? |

Yes thanks RRSpat, I think I've read them all but still not put off, I guess people are more likely to write about their horro stories than their normal running cars. What is the EGR issue, does this cause acceleration and turbo lag? When flooring the accerleatr on a tdv8 should there be any lag at all? Any other tests I should be doing? Cheers |

The turbos are variable geometry design which means little or no turbo lag should be felt. One or two little thoughts; try to check if it is a factory HST by looking at the V5 to see if it is described as an HST although IIRCC when this discussed on the forum some do and some don't. For a small fee you can check on DVLA site and see all the previous MOT certs to check any advisories and the mileage. Also ask to see the service book. Should be a stamp for every 12 months not just every 15k miles.

Hey Paddi, it drove well, no knocking suspension, bushes recently replaced, HST on the V5 and I checked the reg in some insurance websites and it came up with HST. Yes it had sat nav! Checked the ride mode up and down, no errors, so far so good, just need to buy it now and have over some eye watering insurance premiums (live in London) |

Sounds as if you have been seduced as we all have. Sat nav is standard though - it's the little non-slip mat that's a must have (bit of an in joke on here). You could try the new site sponsor A Plan for a quote but I'm with Aviva who gave me a good price so try them both. Interested to know if Lancaster were willing to offer any extras in terms of servicing and extension to the 12 month warranty. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
