Newbie question re: Cam belt replacement

Hi guys, I have just put a down payment on a TDV6 HSE MY06 from a non landrover dealership. The salesman said that the person who traded the RRS in informed them that the cam belt had been done, but that they haven't any documented proof, like receipts or anything. They have assured me that they will check the cam belt and that if it hasn't been done then they will do it. How would I know that it has been done?....Would I just have to take their word for it? I'm not mechanically minded at all so have no clue as to how I should know. Any help here would be appreciated.

Normally you would tell by looking over the service history book, as an 06 it should have at least seven stamps. The belts are required at 7 years or 105k miles, whichever comes first.

Is the service history book up to date? When was the last service carried out? 2014 L405 SDV8 RR Autobiography Cool

It has done 93K miles Jas, the dealership guy said it had been serviced 'just recently'.....but when I asked him if the cam belt had been done at that service he said he didn't know....but the guy who brought it in to them said that it had been....He assures me that if it hasn't been done then they would get it done for me before i collect the car......but I'm wondering if their is any way for me (a non mechanically minded guy) to know that it has had the cam belt done or not.....at the end of the day the dealership could tell me it's done when it's not......I wouldn't know a cam belt from a bag of chips mate Rolling with laughter

You wouldn't know unless you stripped down the front end, to check the belt.

And at that point, you would be as well putting a new belt on it anyway, if only for your own piece of mind Thumbs Up

Not a particularly expensive, or difficult job if you are handy with the spanners. The rear belt can be pretty fiddly though Mad

Thanks Mikey, much appreciated mate....Looks like I will have to rely on dealership honesty and hope that they replace belt if required like they have promised.

You could always just do it anyway for peace of mind, I've just had a letter from Stratstone Lye offering to do it for £399 inc both belts, injection pump belt & tensioners and obviously a loan car for the day.

Seems a pretty good price to me, but mine has already been done anyway

Or for £599 you could have the above plus full service, loads cheaper than the repair bill would be if someone is less than honest with its history Thumbs Up

If they have agreed to check it I'd want to see the car dismantled while they checked it.

You'd soon be able to see a belt (and they should be prepared to show you its position, if they are honest) and see if it looks old or newish - don't admit to knowing nothing.

Take a mechanically minded mate with you.

Don't trust anyone the consequences of wrong info. and premature belt failure are too expensive to play about.

I had Similar concerns when I bought mine- and still have. £399 seems a great price so I think I'll get it done- rather do it twice than not at all. Why don't you contact the previous owner and ask him where he had it done? You could check then?

@Sparky I was thinking this myself mate, better safe than sorry. Once I get the car I will get it done for peace of mind.

@drdelrrs I hear what your saying but the dealership is over an hours drive away and I haven't the time to go up there with work commitments etc. Looks like I will have to take Sparky's advise and get it done anyway once I have the car for my own peace of mind.

@Bladeboy I don't have the documents for the car yet mate, I have no clue who the previous owner was.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. This is a really great forum, glad that I found it! Thumbs Up

It's a no brainer, you would be stupid not to fit a new Cam Belt.

Make sure they fit a genuine part as well. Thumbs Up In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Without documentation I would have to assume it has NOT been done and price the car accordingly. I woiuld not accept the word of the seller that they will do it without having a look at the stripped down engine. If you get it done don't forget to get the oil pump housing done at the same time for peace of mind - they can fail after a belt change but is relatively cheap to do when the cam belt is off - particularly for the peace of mind.

Agree, I had my oil pump replaced as well, peace of mind, however I think the early sports were OK, I think it was the 08's like mine that had the problem. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

I actually thought it was the later models that did NOT have the issue and it was from 05-08 that were the problem. 07MY RRS TDV6
