I think it's part of the whole "we must have lots of fancy gizmos on it to make it feel like a luxury vehicle" mantra.

I think it's stupid, whatever the reason (unless it's done to avoid water getting in via the dip tube when deep wading, in which case, fair enough). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It would be a simple matter to have the dipstick screw in to avoid water ingress.

Sounds like a really daft idea if you ask me.

I check mine every couple of weeks, but to be honest it's never needed a top up at all in 3 1/2 years. It is annoying trying to remember to check it before turning it over though. I wouldn't think the new one would be any more of an oil burner (higher output maybe??)

Funnily enough this made check the level and I got the add 0.5l message which I duly did. Worth keeping an eye as mine has burnt that over 7500 miles running in. 2017 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Santorini Black

I used to enjoy the whole dipstick procedure in my cars( when they had one!)

Now every vehicle has a different procedure , need. To be an astronaut to figure it all out!!

Now.... Where did I leave that oily rag ????......

But are our new sports filled to the maximum with oil from the factory Question Question Going back a few years when i was talking to (Then a machanic) Now a technician Laughing he told me that they never filled the oil to the max from factory Shocked usually only half fill the oil, because this saves them a fortune in oil over time. Some modern hi-tech diesels can use oil during the first 10k miles, so regular oil level checks are a sensible practice on new engines.

Your cars will be factory filled to max level when they are built in Bridgend.
For info, the dipstick was removed because this is a well known source for engine air leaks (industry wide, not just JLR) which can result in an engine light illumination and also because emissions checks are getting ever more stringent, removing that potential leak path allows the EMS to keep a tighter hold on things, especially with a DI engine like the V8SC

I dont think that is the reason because the dipstick is still there with a very dipstick type handle. Its so obviously a dipstick that when I pulled the handle and there was no stick attached I thought 'oh f Censored k, I hope thats not lying in the sump now.' So I checked the manual and all was revealed.

Regarding the sump being airtight I find that hard to believe, you must have some sort of crankcase venting / breathing as the pressure within the crankcase is constantly fluctuating, if you don't there's a very good chance of it going bang due a build up of pressure, for whatever reason. 2017 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Santorini Black

The dispstick missing altogether I was referring to is the AJ133SC V8 engine, not on the V6D which isn't a JLR unit.
I had a MkIV Golf once which lit an engine light because the EMS couldn't cope with the unmetered air passing over the O2 sensor. The cause was a cracked dipstick tube.

As for the crankcase pressure fluctuation, yes of course it changes but because of the way the part load and full load breather systems are balanced, the sump will always be designed to run at a slightly negative pressure.
This is maintained by the breather gases being recycled back to the inlet system, and from there passed through the combustion process.
Even boosted engines very very rarely go very slightly positive pressure as the pressure leaks down past the rings but the second it goes off boost, negative pressure is restored.

We are talking about the MY14 and the last of the "old" model, both of which are fitted with the SDV6 engine which IS a JLR product not an after market add on!! Laughing I think we all know where is comes from and it is unfair to say it is not a JLR unit.

After all most cars contain huge amounts of bits that are not actually made by the actual car company, including engines. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

I'm sorry that you seem to have taken my note as insulting, not the intention at all.

The SDV6 is as you rightly state, fitted to a great deal of JLR products and it is a very sound engine. However, it is not a JLR designed engine as the AJ133 and new AJ126 V6SC engines are.
Consequently they have a little less control over what is and is not fitted to engines that are sourced elsewhere.
