Picked up my 07 TDV8 with 106k on it last week. bought it knowing it had an issue the guy that sold it to me told me it was turbo related.

But speaking with my mechanic, he has just told me that its more likely going to be manifold related as the squeal goes with a cylinder compression like a squirrel. As opposed to a constant whine that a failing turbo normally gives.

All the power is still there and the car has no logged faults, and no lights on the dash. just wondering if this is a common fault or has happened to anyone in the past?

over the last couple of days it has developed an occasional misfire aswell.

Aswell as that, ive been told its only accesible by removing the body. is this true?

The usual advice at this stage is to check the intercooler hoses for splits or other damage. They are the two big ones right at the top/front of the engine bay looking like radiator hoses. They are a relatively cheap item to replace if they do show any damage. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As has been said - check the hoses associated with the turbos; there are two more short 'L' shaped ones under the engine acoustic cover (my local LR dealer says these short ones are a common issue but I've never seen a post about them on this forum!).
Plus there are four more hoses that are only accessible from below the engine and you have to remove the metal 'sump protector' and some plastic guards to get at them.

And yes - according to previous posts it is a body off job to replace exhaust manifold gaskets. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Ok I'll try that first, are you suggesting those for the whistling noise or the misfiring? Or a combo of both?

Whistling noise particularly. Maybe if there is a big enough leak it could cause a misfire but TBH I don't know. Usually people report black exhaust smoke on acceleration and some loss of power when a hose is leaking. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Ok thanks for the help. My garage is waiting on a two post ramp to be installed, but looks like it could be two more weeks before its fitted and he can lift the body. I know it's possible to remove the pass side head off with the body still on.

But is it possible to remove drivers side head with the body still on and then he can access the manifold that way?

well worth doing to gain easier access to all components

by the way whats the condition of EGR valves as they can both whistle and cause misfire

whats the result of egr dynamic test ?
