Good old scammers...how it actually works.. *Updated

So I put a motorbike up for sale for £4k a few weeks back and have been inundated with scammer emails, thought it would be interesting to show everyone how the scam works and follow one through, this particular chap was called Tolbert Green, tolbert089@gmail.com, I tried to have a little fun with him along the way...

Hi, the bike is very scratched and dropped many times, the engine is not so good and only one of the tyres turn.

Brilliant, I was worried that you would be deterred by the condition of the bike but I am very glad that everything is fine.

I agree that Paypal is the best option. I am not going to be available for you to pick up the bike and will need to arrange for your shipping agent to ship the bike. I am happy to cover the cost of this delivery and simply need your full name....your full address with postcode......your telephone numbers both office and mobile/home numbers. I will then arrange for the money to be transferred to your paypal account so that you can arrange for shipping.

I have just made the payments now and i expect PayPal to have emailed
by now, i sent £4,450.00 GBP in all to your PayPal
(*****@gmail.com) you can check your inbox or spam box for notification,
I added £400.00 GBP meant for pick up fee
commission and delivery and £50.00 GBP for the western union charges
fee, they said they have emailed you to this effect, you will need to
send the £400.00 GBP to the pick up agent via western union money
transfer,so that PayPal can credit £4,450.00 GBP into your account as
soon as you have emailed the western union details (Actual Amount
Sent,10-Digits MTCN#,Sender name and Sender Address) to PayPal
Customer Care, i added extra £50.00 GBP to cover the western union
charges which shouldn't be more that £40.00 - £50.00, Here is the pick up
agent information needed to get the money sent through western union
money transfer: You can also get the Western Union Done online via
www.westernunion.co.uk

Here is the pick up agent information you need to transfer the money too once again.

I am afraid that the transaction can not be canceled because, it has
already been processed and the transfer charges has been deducted
from my account and this action can not be undone. I implore you to
find every means to have this transaction completed asap because, head
or tail you have nothing to loose Otherwise, you leave me no choice
than to further report this transaction to paypal FBI because, you are
starting to act strange to me especially for not emailing me and paypal
will take all legal action against you because I intend to forward
all our emails to them for record purpose.

As you can see, the emails just keep coming and now the Paypal FBI are getting involved, haha.

The whole basis of the fraud is the fake emails from Paypal saying that the transfer is on hold until the Western Union payment is made, which could convince some people, my mum for one would probably trust them!

I don't mind if the bike only has one wheel working and it's been dropped , if its still for sale I will pay all these charges to your friend Tolbert..... It sounds like a good deal by the way !! I think you just picked Tolbert up wrong!! TDV8 HSE....Gone but not forgotten ....class act

My suggestion would be escalation to an international incident. Create a email thread (easy to do much better than what the scammers are send me PM and I'll help set it up...lol) between you and the Scotland yard, have Scotland yard get all uppity about the FBI dictating policy in their Jurisdiction etc... make it look like they are going to contact the FBI for real...
