United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

It seems to me that an awful lot of RRS drivers who post on here actually do care about what others think. They do care what impression their vehicle gives. One only has to look at all of the threads asking others' opinions about cosmetic things like wheels and trim and colour choices. All of those berating the OP for caring about others' opinions should bear this in mind.

My own view is that if you can afford it, and you like it then buy an RRS and enjoy it. If others in your workplace make comments then point out that everyone has their own spending priorities and this is one of yours. I've been in a similar position and my stock answer was " I'm 40 and have no kids, why the hell shouldn't I drive it?". That usually got the correct response back.

It should be noted that RRSs are aspirational vehicles - as can be seen by the number of people buying older/cheaper examples at the limit of their budget. Aspirational items also attract jealousy - look at the image a 911 Turbo had in the late 80s; to some it was the thing to own, to others it meant you were a overpaid hooray from the City.

The problem the OP made was bringing wealth in to the question - that's just not a discussion the British like having in public (or even in private in many cases). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If you work for yourself then it may not be a good idea to pitch up in an RRS. I confess to having hid mine away on occasions especially when turning up for meetings with public sector organisations.

To the non-motoring section of the public its true they are seen as more expensive than in reality; which is the issue and I have come across jealousy through ignorance over the 40 years I've run FFRR and RRS.

Only you know the people with whom you work.

A member of the family owns his own business and wont by a FFRR (which he loves and can afford now) purely because of the image it has and how that will appear to his clients.

Equally I know someone who has no kids, house and no mortgage, limited outgoings so they both work part time at a supermarket for "living money" and have a new discovery and holidays every year - they say the same thing...we have almost no costs so why not.

There will always be someone jealous of you, making an opinion on what you have or you will be aspiring to be like...that's the way of a capitalist world. Mike

Wales 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange

The most I've spent on a car is £20k. When people say 'look what you're driving' I remind them that their Focus ST cost the same as my car, so whats the difference? Even a very modest Fiesta etc is £14k, or a Kuga being £19k - but there's loads of those out there, and no one thinks that they're pompous or 'rich'.

In fact, my mate looks 'down' on me and my car, saying that I have the 'girly' version of the real Range Rover (FFRR) He thinks the Evoque is for Range Rover wannabes who don't know class, style and quality when it's sitting in front of their faces.  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

England 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Siberian Silver

As many have said if you can afford it. do it. Don't get too tied up in other peoples household income because things are are rarely that simple. I could earn 300k but be mortgaged up to the hilt with 4 kids at university- (I don't and I haven't) so probably couldn't afford a RRS, or I could earn 20k and be canny with money and afford one with ease. It's tragic to think if you driving about in a car you don't want because of what you perceive other people think.
I also have an old mx-5. I get loads of stick at work because I'm a 6' 4 and probably look like a fool in it- but it's great fun and I love driving it- and I'm quite happy to give back as good as I get!
Life's full of the haters and also much too short for them- so please please please go and buy a range rover sport and enjoy every single minute of it.
Neil

From my similar experience, people/friends/colleagues may well pull their face or talk behind your back about what you have bought and spend your equally hard earned money on, but the ones that matter will soon get over it and the ones that don't are not worth bothering about. 2014 Nara Bronze SDV6

People do judge you by your car.

Our salesman have had the bmw's and audis taken off them and given "cheaper" looking cars.

Also there a is plumber round me that drives a f150 6.2 v8 pickup, now i would expect his prices to be expensive but for all i know he could be cheap. Ive judged him by if he can run that his profit margins are too big.

Another example is my mate who is a builder, he buys the same van in the same colour so customers dont know its a new van, again for fear of think he earns too much. (he has private plate so that covers the age).

Then me, i had a 2 year old full fat range rover v8 petrol in black at 25, straight away got called a drug dealer.

Dobbo,

Since you've asked everyone about their finances and household income (I did answer your poll honestly incidentally).

Just out of interest, will you be purchasing your MY 2010 RRS using any finance or will you buy outright?

I currently have a 320d M Sport. My current short list is either a BMW 520d M Sport Touring, 6 months old with 5k miles, or a 3 year old RRS. A totally different kettle of fish I know, but it really is one way or another. Head and heart stuff.

This is exactly what i mean. So as TST717 said..."I'm out". Think I'd prefer something equally as great to drive, practical but without the negative image. My second choice is a 6 month old 5 Series Touring M Sport.

Take out a 25k additional mortgage and move to a detached house. Won't a BMW have the same effect as the RRS or are RRS just so unbelievably aspirational in the UK that they are the ultimate status symbol? Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
