Advice! Diesel v 4.2 Petrol?

Hi,

Yes, I'm still looking for that first RRS purchase....! Wink

Having been soo focused on the 2.7 TDV6, I am now being swayed to the 4.2 petrol for the obvious extra Ooompf.

My budget is approx £16k/17k and I'll do probably no more than 10,000 miles per annum.

If you had the choice...what would you go for the diesel or the 4.2 petrol?

Thanks,
Simon

Pretty new to the sport myself mate- but if it were just down to choice i'm guessing most people would prefer the petrol. The only reason I went for diesel was that I thought it would be cheaper to run and it's plenty quick enough for me. But if money were no object I would have gone petrol.

I had an older V8 petrol P38 last year, you could almost watch the fuel gauge drop. I thought it had a hole in the tank. Shocked

I've always leaned towards big engined cars, but that was in a league of its own.

If money were no object as the chap above says, petrol would be the likely choice. As it is, I too find the diesel quite adequate although not blistering.

If price of fuel isn't a issue then go for a S/charger, mind you the tdv8 re-mapped has a fair bit of get up and go, well enough to get me into trouble any way and around 25/26mpg to the gallon.
Used to have a 4.6 P38 some time ago lucky to get it into double figures around town only averaged about 15mpg at the best of times.

Cheers
Col

If you've done your sums & can afford the Petrol - I'm afraid - I'm biased Very Happy Supecharged all day long - find one with low mileage & Service history - then enjoy Whistle 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

I had a 2007 TDV8 about 5 years ago and loved it. When I decided I wanted another RRS, I bought a 2005 SC. I bought it because I don't do much mileage (maybe less than 5k pa) so it made sense to me. That said, as the cost of fuel is so high I drive it very gently! If I did say 1,000 or so miles a month, I would want a diesel.

If your asking the question then you have already decided on the diesel. You don't use your head when buying a petrol sc. Shocked

I do love the sound of the charger but MPG comes into play for me.

Buy with the heart and get the charger, buy with the wallet and buy the derv.

i had this idea and went with the 2.7tdv6, and tbh its thirsty compared to my m3 and x5, i really dread to think what id of got from a petrol!! i do 100 miles a week if im lucky so mainly shortish trips but my derv is only doing 22 mpg im not too bothered admittingly just i think if id gone sc it would have been more like 8-12 mpg which even on my milage would take some stomaching!!

Short trips will be killing your fuel economy. You'd get several more mpg on longer runs.

On short, local trips I get 18mpg from my TDV8. Add about 10 to that for a decent run on the motorways. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As Peachy said, that looks a £15-£16k car to me.
