Sorry to respond to X5, but I'm afraid ou are now wrong. With terrain response you would be able to drive a RRS on 19" or possibly even 20" rims in high ratio where most cars would need low or an AT/ MTR tread and certainly way beyond where an X5 would go. I'm not knocking the X5 in anyway it is a great car for its purpose, that is not as an offroad vehicle. The RRS however is a full on off roader although most will never be used that way.

Until you see TR in action and drive a car with it, it is hard to understand, but having driven on days that RRS and D3s have attended we were tackling obstacles that Defender drivers could not believe we negotiated. Most these drivers were first timers so it wasn't their skill but the cars. Some of us with D3s have added off road tyres but in the UK your reluctance to risk your car probably limits their usefullness.

You will have to forgive my ignorance, but isn't TR designed to automatically select low ratio if needed? We can go on and on about this, but as was proved by a certain J Clarkson, the X5 was beaten in a muddy environment by a Range Rover, but because low ratio was used. The point I was making was that to have a go at someone owning a 4x4 that can't cope on a serious level off road is misguided. And as you have rightly pointed out, there are many a Range Rover owner who will see no more off road than to mount the curb. But before you all start shouting 'Hang him', I have posted else where that I was very close to buying the RRS but was put of by the lack of performance and fuel economy. I don't need a serious off road vehicle and so wanted more road biased attributes but the ability to deal with harsh weather, snow etc.

Don

PS. Have you let the side down by replying to me? Isn't that the idea? I have only been on your forum for a few days, but enjoy the 'crac' as we say over here. Because of the car I own, I don't expect to be able to contribute very much but would like to feel welcome all the same.
