Considering we get wet winters with a chance of snow/ice isn't a B rated tyre better than a E or am I missing something Question

Yes, you're missing the fact that the EU tyre ratings are, at best, a little misleading and, at worst, a waste of time.

For a start, each tyre manufacturer or importer carries out the tests for their tyres. There is no national / international testing body. The tests are carried out by comparing each tyre tested to a reference tyre. If that reference tyre is made by the manufacturer of the tyre also being tested then it's likely that their new tyre is going to be better than that reference tyre so you'll get a misleading result. Each reference tyre will also be different so each manufacturer's comparisons will only be worthwhile within their own brands. I.e comparing across makes isn't as simple as the label would suggest.

Comparisons between tyres with the same ratings ought to mean that they are "equal" tyres right? Maybe not. Read this: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Goody...unched.htm
They tested two tyres with B/A EU tyre labels. Both from big names (Goodyear and Michelin) and they got quite marked differences in performance. Now imagine what the difference might be between that Goodyear B/A marked tyre and a budget Chinese "ditch finder" tyre with a reported B/A result.

EU tyre labels do not give the information that were intended to give.

It's better to find and read tyre tests carried out by car magazines, testing websites etc. Then you will get a comparison of the performance of a given tyre with its direct competitors.

For example: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2013-...e-Test.htm
The winning tyre (Goodyear Vector 4Season) and the 8th tyre (Kleber Quadraxer) are both given E ratings for wet performance by their respective manufacturer. As far as I can find, the last placed tyre (Nexen N Priz 4s) has a C rating for wet performance from its manufacturer (found on a tyre sales site as I couldn't find it anywhere else). Buying on the basis of the EU tyre label would see you buying the Nexen. This tyre had the remarks: "Lack of grip in the wet with considerably increased wet braking distances and poor aquaplaning resistance. High levels of understeer in the wet and dry handling tests." given to it... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Ok - if the labels can't be trusted and magazine tests tend to be cars not SUVs added to which best buys vary depending on tyre sizes/profiles and vehicle how do you know what to buy Shocked

Its down to personal experience Muddy, thats what makes forums great, people sharing their experiences. I would only recommend something if i'd tried it myself and it was excellent. I would never recommend something if Joe bloggs says its good. I would recommend Wintrac 4 Xtreme 275-40-20's. I can also recommend them in 19's too. Thumbs Up

It's in German but the results are easy enough to understand:

Do you really need winter tyres on a 4x4?

Perhaps the most interesting test was the Honda CR-V, because this is, after all, a part-time 4WD soft-roader – exactly the sort of rough-and-tumble crossover buyers flock to because they like the pretensions of all-weather ability. Well, dispel those assumptions, because on normal tyres the CR-V was a law unto itself on the low-grip ‘ice hill’. Despite the vocal protests of the ABS, and best efforts of the all-wheel drive brain, the CR-V responded to steering inputs like a fairground dodgem, where you twirl the wheel to engage reverse but become a drifting duck in the meantime.

Braking performance, or the total lack thereof, was downright frightening. The winter tyre-shod car was by no means stuck to the road, but it allowed measured braking and steering with very little electronic interference. The glassy nothingness of response through the steering also disappeared. No matter what the brochure says, this test suggests you need cold-weather tyres fitted before you can tackle icy roads in real confidence – even if you drive an SUV.

While it's true that SUVs, 4x4s and four wheel drive vehicles can offer improved traction in the snow over their two wheel drive counterparts, they sadly don't offer any advantages under braking and steering, meaning if you want to keep mobile in all conditions, winter tyres can help.

Reason 1 – I have a 4X4 so I don’t need to worry.
Is your 4X4 fitted with specialised off road rubber? No? Well then unfortunately you do need to worry. Four wheel drive systems can provide better traction on low grip surfaces, but comparing a mid-summer muddy slope and mid-winter icy road will give very different results. Regardless of what it is you are driving, be it a Land Rover Defender or a Toyota Rav4, the reality is that it’s the rubber connecting your car has to the tarmac that makes all the difference. Having a four wheel drive system in icy conditions simply means that rather than having two wheels fighting for grip (as in most road cars) you’ve effectively got all four wheels slipping instead. Also almost all 4X4’s are notorious for having a high centre of gravity – great for seeing over the traffic in Chelsea, but not so great if you’re hoping for stability on a slippery road

Having spent days looking at reviews and conflicting results I have opted to follow the handbook Confused

Quote:
Approved winter tyres

19 inch wheels 255/50 R19 107H Dunlop Winter Sport M3

20 inch wheels 275/40 R20 106V Continental Cross Contact Winter

Price difference between 20" and 19" is £183 plus £120 a year swapping if I use same set of alloys - so going to get a set of 19" alloys for winter with the Dunlop before my head explodes - can not see insurance objecting to LR approved winter tyres either Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Many, many happy customers running Wintrac 4 Xtreme, good price and most important thing is availability as there is nothing worse than having four tyres fitted then damaging one and not being able to match it up.

Lots of other make out there as well......Pays your money and all that.

Always happy to quote on any tyre if we can help. Thumbs Up Please call us 01737 241370 for the quickest response Smile

This is the approved tyre link https://www.landrover-tyres.com/GetTyre/JL...%20Kingdom

Confusingly if I put in my13 it brings up the wrong tyre size and on earlier years 18" but these can not be fitted after my10 Confused

Also checking on Dunlop website the recommended winter tyre comes up as as car tyre not 4x4 and appears to be discontinued - I am going round in circles Banging Head

I have ordered the M3's recommended but as AJS says I am now worried if I damage one will I be able to get a replacement Shocked Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

When i phoned my dealer asking for a price on winter tyres, he asked me which make do i prefer,. Last year they had Wintrac's on offer, he gave me a price of £262 a corner fully fitted 275 40 20. And offered to store my summer tyres. Muddy you don't have to go with L/R recommendation. Dealers don't..
What offers have you got Ajs on wintrac's 20" ?

I was just trying to simplify things - aviva advise that provided I fit manufacturers recommended winter tyres there is no requirement to inform them and no charge Rolling Eyes
