LIMP HOME

Hi, This is my first post after registering although i have used this forum since getting my RRS back in 2008 , largely the car has had lots of little problems and niggles but never actually left me at the side of the road so I cant fault that and I do love the car, it also saved my life when an Audi A4 crashed into me causing £25k of damage (no really)

But limp home mode has scared the pants off me more that once , like overtaking a truck on an A road and also in the fast lane of the M25 at 70Mph ( estimated ) - got a warning saying special programs off and lost power , got away with it both times, finally junked EGR Valves but still happens and strangely regularly on exactly the same 100 yards of road 4 times, diagnostics now say Boost Control, so got my top mechanic looking in to it for me , any ideas what this could mean

Has Limp Home mode actually killed anyone yet, surely a red warning light warning you to pull over would be safer I would have thought,

Any thoughts

At a guess on the boost control I would check intercooler pipes for a split mate and as for the limp mode causing injury or accident as a result of the limp mode that's a good question hopefully not.

You really need to find the exact fault code. Is this a V6 or 8. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

I had a Merc C32 AMG estate that used to throw error codes and go into limp mode while overtaking. Caught me out big time in Malvern Hills while overtaking a lorry. Two days later it was traded in for an E55 estate. The car was sold and buyer traced me through Tracker registration. He had a new wiring loom and ecu fitted under warrantee to resolve the problem. Scarey stuff Rolling Eyes 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Waiting for it to go in to have the codes read and will post details when i have them, in the meantime dubious about overtaking and worried when it is going to kick down, passed on the information in the replies to my mechanic, thanks to all who replied

limp home mode should be banned !

driving 70mph and a little fault causes limp mode ? which in turn causes a crash and a fatality ! I'd rather the engine blow up !!  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

after two limp mode episodes my wife and two of my grandchildren has no faith in my RRS and dont want to travel in it anymore 30K worth of car and what really makes me angry is the main dealers assured my wife and I evertthing was ok what would have happened if I did get a bad shunt when the engine died for the second time. would they have had any feelings for putting us in that positition.

I have not had this issue with my sport but I remember being in a M5 a few years back and when the driver hit the accelerator too hard on a incline the car went into safe mode ( I imagine similar to limp mode) and could only do 30 mph until we pulled over and didn't start the car for over an hour. After my mate spoke to a M car specialist he was told alot of cars have this issue on inclined roads.

At Last I know what is wrong with my RRS

I now have found out why my RRS goes into Limp Home , it the Boost Control (Turbo) Solenoid, joy joy joy

Hooray found it at last, get the beers in, well actually no! you cant replace these so it needs a complete new Turbo, oh well never mind not the end of the world.

Until you find that you need the body off to change a Turbo, wheehey (you could do it in situ but it would take longer and cost more and before you ask, yes I have done lots of research on this) , so body off it is then! ha ha praise be to the Lord

OK still not end of world, until you realise that it would be good to do a re-map to avoid other problems, ( ok better fuel more power ) so the total cost from LR around would be 3.5-4k quoted and an independent around 2k plus anything else they find which they advise me that in all honesty, they will find other issues as they always do , brilliant, over the moon with this.

So Christmas is cancelled and I am off down the pub to drown my sorrows and contemplate getting a LR Defender instead , well actually No, as my friend has one of these and just got a bill for £1200.00 for suspension problems ( never been off road) and they advised that gearbox has a death rattle ( 42.000 miles ) gearbox supply and fit f... knows how much that will be.

Advice to prospective RRS owners - don't ask what Land Rover can do for you , ask how much you can spend with them

RRS's are now relatively affordable but can you deal with seeing a simple warning light on the dash and then the engine cutting out whilst over taking a truck on an A road or on the fast lane of the motorway and then spend 2k -3k - 4k to turn off the light !!!

With all that said, I still love my RRS and cannot think of driving anything else (ok a Bentley Conti would be nice), so I will just cough up the money get it fixed and spend long nights praying to great god LR that nothing else goes wrong with it. I don't thrash it, got a full LR Service History, it gets everything it needs, I polish it all the time, love it , hate it , cant live without it, in fact I had a girlfriend like that once, the cow left me for a tall, intelligent, good looking bloke with 3.0 Litre Granada Ghia !!!!!!
