Unusual problem solved. For the last week or so I've had an unusual noise coming from the boot- sounding like two pieces of polystyrene rubbing together- but very regularly. Also, when lowering or raising the air suspension a faint bleeping noise.
I've sussed it now- the iPod lead was connected but no iPod on the other end. Stereo set to aux and the volume quite high. Silence again now!
