'Pulsing' when engine braking

Hi all,

As a relative newbie to the RRS, I just want to see if this is normal or if you have experienced this..

I drive along at 30mph, reach a slight decline and let off the accelerator, and then I notice the slight pulsing of the engine braking every second or two repeatedly until I either brake manually or accelerate out of it. It's really slight but I'm really conscious of it now - It's like I am tapping the brakes ever so slightly (enough to make your head move forward a bit) and then let off for a second, over and over.

I know this sounds strange, but is that normal??

Gary

Strange indeed, and certainly not the norm. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

I've just taken it out for a quick drive again now, and it is still doing it, albeit very gently - If you just slightly depress the accelerator it stops doing it, as well as if you knock it into Neutral.

How can I check whether the gearbox software needs updating?

Does the rev counter show any movement? Almost sounds like the gearbox changing gear on a trailing throttle...

Has the gearbox oil ever been changed? It might be worth finding an indie garage to do it for you. (LR labour and oil prices are a bit silly) 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Spain

are you going with cruise control on??? it tends to have similar behaviour when driving down a decline.

Did you try to pull up de accelerator or brake pedal to see if is a bad contact o a non "returning to home" issue?

I had a similar problem with a previous car and the accelerator pedal was duff..

@ RRSTDV8: No movement on the rev counter no (unless it's that small it isn't registering - it is only slight but I can notice it now). It's not changing up and down hunting for a gear. I only bought the car a few days ago so not aware of any gearbox oil change - I was lead to believe these were 'lifetime' items though I'm not sure they should be..!

@CUCO: No, cruise control is off - I'm not even that happy to use it on the motorway as the adaptive bit likes to play tricks sometimes Laughing I'll try and pull the pedal up with my foot next time I drive it and let you know - I've not heard of that before though.

@AWD MAN: If it was a warped disc then it would still do it in neutral right? It seems to go when I disengage drive gear whilst rolling...

The mystery deepens, may be worth catching up with another RRS owner around here in Manchester to see if it happens in another car too and I'm just noticing the smallest thing...

Could be a torque converter getting tired or a problem with the lock-up clutch perhaps.

I'd get the gearbox oil and filter changed and see if that helps. Will also allow you to see if there is any metal in the oil (the filter has magnets on it to collect metal swarf). If that's all clear then at least you can tick on possible cause off the list. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

*UPDATE*

I took the motor out for a long drive last night and can now recreate it time and time again as follows;

At 30mph or less and letting off the accelerator, the engine braking is such that every second or two the revs will 'bounce' about 250rpm until I brake or re-accelerate. In the drop from 30mph to 15mph it can bounce 6 or 7 times (which suggests it is not just changing down the gears right?). Each bounce remains about 250rpm and stays at roughly the same point it re-emerges ont he rev counter (though slowly reducing as the engine speed reduces). It does this 'bouncing' harder on slight downhill slopes but can be recreated on the flat. Anything over 30(ish)mph seems to show no problem at all when letting off the accelerator and doesn't register on the rev counter.

It's almost like it's thinking of changing down a gear and then last minute changes up again - is that the torque converter?

I've read elsewhere that the gearboxes have had a couple of software updates available to them, but I cannot see that this has been done on mine (I only bought it last week). I wonder if that may cure this without having to do too much more with it.

Thanks for the suggestion regards oil change etc - I'll certainly keep that in mind, but I'm hoping to get a more complete picture of possible issues before I book it in to be looked at.

...and thanks for all the help so far! Smile RRS 2006 4.2 V8 Supercharged

Having the gearbox reset from adaptive would be my first step to see if that cures it.. as you have said you have only had a short while and the old owners driving habits will still be logged..

Flack Thumbs Up

Think I agree with the suggestions about a possible TC problem and the first step to try is clearing the gearbox adaptations. Here's what the IID Tool manual has to say about the latter:

Transmission ECU

-Adaptation Reset Clear Adaptations Values

Gear shifting time tends to increase as internal components of a transmission wear out. This has a negative effect on the brake clutches. The transmission ECU will adapt to counteract the effect of wear and improve shifting.

This routine resets the adaptation statistics back to the factory default. After the adaptation has been cleared, the transmission ECU will analyze shifting behaviours using sensors readings and compensate accordingly.

Use
The adaptation reset routine is necessary when, for example, one of these components is replaced:
• Transmission oil
• Any component inside the transmission.
Some transmissions ECU will also «learn» and adapt to your driving habits. This routine may also be useful for someone who purchased a used vehicle and wants the transmission to shift according to his or her driving style.

CAUTION The adaptation reset routine may cause the transmission to behave
erratically over a period of time.

I need to do that. Previous owner of the barge must have driven everywhere in Daisy mode and gear changes are way off where I would like plus incredibly slow to react when approaching junction or roundabout. My guess is kick down never been used and manual changes are order of the day Rolling with laughter 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

@Paddi
That facility is still in beat and hasn't yet been added to the updates available on the IID site. As soon as it's available I shall be resetting the adaptives on mine to see if I can improve the gearbox's behaviour. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
