The TDV8; Is It Really That Bad?

As some may know, after selling my RR Sport, I'm looking for another one and I fancy the TDV8 because of the extra power/torque etc but I've got to admit that Simple1's experience has left me a little wary of buying one.

Now I know that forums are full of horror stories and to take a lot of the negativity with a pinch of salt, but half of me is really wanting one and the other half is simply saying to just buy another TDV6 and buy a B.A.S. remap.

So... What are the supposed 'weak points' of the TDV8? And what do you think I should go for, TDV8 or remapped TDV6?

Whistle Purchase a Petrol - Supercharged - apart from the cost of fuel Laughing In my 3 years as a member I can not ever recall a thread with horror stories like the diesels.
Yes - I am biased but the car historically comes with a better spec & none of the worries. Very Happy

What sort of MPG do you get out of the S/C Peachy?

I'd hazard a guess that it's not too hard to get it into single figures?

I think it would be wrong to condemn the TDV8 on one person's (all be it nightmarish) experience.

There are plenty out there running just fine, and more reliably than the TDV6 TBH RRS gone

After having both I would not go back to the TDV6, I had an 06 TDV6 for a few years and had problem after problem. Since changing to the 08 TDV8 the difference is amazing. As AWD said all cars can have there problems and Simple1's were horrendous but I personally would not change. Spud Smile

I think the simple answer re the TDV8 is yes it can be a nightmare as you have seen from Simple's experience. I also had a 'lemon' which eventually the dealer replaced and was a total pain in the Censored & that car had had a new engine, at least two replacement turbos (at different times), failed diff, etc etc etc.

That said of course there are many happy owners out there and indeed the TDV8 is a very nice drive when it is working as expected.

Bottom line is like any LR get a bad one and you'll need deep pockets and lots of patience, but when they work they are great.

Only advice I would offer is always get one with a LR warranty from one of the better LR main agents, that way you have some peace of mind and insurance against huge bills.

I've took chances on supposedly 'unreliable' cars before, so I'm not too worried, it's just that I have had such a good experience with my RRS TDV6 that I don't want to sully it and buy an inherently 'unreliable' vehicle.

I just need to find a nice TDV8 now... Whistle

According to present on board readings 13.3 mpg Laughing Laughing - I spend about £40 a week in fuel that's using Shell Nitro+ - £50 if I let the wife go shopping & visiting relatives. I work local to my home address & don't just drive for the sake of driving.
Without doubt my RRS is a luxury and that's how I treat it. We have another family car a VW Polo - ( 3 weeks old ) it does the job & it does it well but it's not a RRS.
Just recently I thought about selling mine & moving up to 10MY Diesel ( may be open to offers ). I appreciate fuel is on the expensive side but it's all about the individuals circumstances.

There's no doubt that the TDV8 turbos can fail but then so do the turbos on the TDV6 the difference seems to be that they don't take the rest of the engine with them.

Turbos usually fail because the oil supply route to or from the turbo is partially or completely blocked with sludge. If the oil's route away from the turbo is blocked then it can become pressurised, the seals pop and a lot of oil gets pumped straight in to the engine cylinders. Game over. Big Cry

Observe all the usual precautions such as using the correct oil and OE filter and changing them more often than LR recommend. Plus all the other precautions you can find on any specialist turbo website: wait for the oil to get round before you move off, don't use hard acceleration until the engine is warm, never just switch off after you've been towing or running at high speeds - drive the last few miles to your destination like Miss Daisy and then let it idle for a couple of minutes before shutting off, use an OE air filter and be wary about fitting free flowing exhausts.

Think we can add an extra precaution for diesel variable vane turbos with EGR - and that's try to avoid short runs and always use the super premium fuels like BP Ultimate or Shell nitro and possibly even use a fuel additive like Millers or two-stroke oil. There is a growing body of evidence that short runs and cheap fuels leads to a massive build-up of carbon deposits internally on the variable vane mechanism which eventually jams so the turbo over or under boosts depending which mode it is stuck in. There is some evidence that using better fuel and additives cleans up the engine and turbo. So get out there with a full tank of expensive fuel and additives and give it a good workout at regular intervals.

No doubt my Turbos and engine will now explode in a hail of metal fragments the next time I turn the key - but if you've tried everything to reduce the possibility ..... Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

My car was always serviced as and when, never late. The turbos failed usually after long periods of being parked up and during use, and to be fair, apart from final failure, was due to electronic part not physical turbo failing. The cars are great, just seems to be a higher percentage than any other model falling over. My car was never pushed cold, always allowed to idle after spirited drive or towing, so it wasn't driver cause.
Historically the TDV8 is a good engine, it's all the Ford bits they stuck on them that are crap Rolling with laughter
Having said all of that, I wouldn't buy another, nor do I intend to keep the current one. Hopefully the nice man in the wig will giver a fistful of cash and I will go and buy a new L200 for work, and a three year old Allroad to tow caravan. At which point I can finally remove LR's finger from my butt and stick it in their eye! 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Lol, there's a reason you don't get many petrol horror stories.. Currently 744 used approved RRS on the Land Rover site.. 19 are petrol!

The engine is a Ford engine. It's made by Ford in a Ford factory.

It appears to be the bolt-on bits that cause the problems and they're more likely LR-specced items rather than Ford. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

SPX I'm currently getting between 17.5-19mpg according to the on board computer. This is mostly on the commute to work which consists of 60mph dual carriageway and 25mph site roads (60% dual carriageway). Average speed is about 30mph. So actually getting slightly better figures than those quoted by LR. This is running Shell Super here in Oman but I have no idea how that compares to European fuels as I believe the octane levels here are lower.

Also, my garage recently cleaned the MAS and throttle body which seems to have made a significant difference.
