2007 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 Orkney Grey
Engine replacement

Hi,
Really hoping i can get some good news as lets just say this week has been a stinker.

Last week the oil light came on in my Range rover sport tdv8 2007 model and all power was lost.
AA were called and it was towed to Roeans in Telford (Great place Smile
Diagnosis Oil pump failed and now the crank shaft is Censored and the main bearing has spun.

So been advised its a replacement engine job.

Ive come across some horror stories of people paying and having there car towed away never to see money or car again.

So the general question is:

1)Are you aware of anywhere i can possibly source a TDV8 3.6l engine
2) Also if possible anywhere that can do supply and fit.

Im praying you experts have some answers as this week has been a truly terrible one and could really do with a lift and been looking all day but now seem to be going in circles.

Danny,
Sorry to hear about your TDV8 problem and feel for you as it must be a nightmare when it all goes bang.
Bit confused by your profile saying TDV6 but guessing you changed and didn't update profile accordingly?

You may have seen Simple1's long and ghastly experience with catastrophic TDV8 engine failure ('Not so bulletproof TDV8' thread under 'general'). Simple1 went for the apparently '5 star' solution of a Land Rover approved rebuilt engine fitted by a Land Rover dealership. Let's just say it err.....didn't go well.

There are no brand new TDV8 units available it seems. Rebuilding these complex engines correctly might be possible but as far as we can discover Land Rover don't make the necessary parts available to anyone but their approved remanufacturer and we are not allowed to know who that is. The so -called reconditioned units that some companies sell are likely to be cobbled together from parts of several broken engines we understand and so may not be reliable to say the least.

The legendary (on this forum and especially the Disco 3 site) Disco Mikey was faced with a similar dilemma to yours, although with a TDV6, and after a great deal of research decided to go down the route of sourcing an engine from a breaker. Some breakers get in late model cars written off by insurance companies but which may have a perfectly serviceable engine. If it was me - think I would be looking at buying an engine from one of the breakers with a good reputation. Here are links to the few that have been recommended:

http://www.cws4x4.co.uk/2010-model-year-l3...-thank-you

http://www.douglasvalley.co.uk/default.asp

http://www.motorhog.co.uk/

Personally I've only had dealings with Douglas Valley out of these three to obtain parts for my Porsches and they have been great.

Your next problem is to find someone to fit it for you but I see you have already been given the details of someone near you. You could perhaps have the car and engine delivered to Disco Mikey if he'd take on the job but unfortunately his establishment is in Scotland (and not even the Southern bit!).

Whatever you decide to do - keep the forum posted. We'll all be rooting for you and will offer any help we can I'm sure. Best of Luck.

Many thanks for the the detailed reply Smile

Had a few options on the table today.

1) Salvage engine fitted at £4850
2)Engine refurb at £3500 and the guy has done a few and come recomended by my regular landy garage.
The car has gone there today and i will know for sure tomorrow.

The guy seemed to know his stuff and has managed to source the parts from the apprently 1 place in the UK who does them so all fingers crossed at this point.

Once its repaired im doing a part ex as dont think i can ever trust it now and knowing there is such a parts shortage i need to think of this.

Also filed papers in the small claims court today as only had it just over 5 months and in that time had a turbo go within 6 weeks and then had a major oil leak because of worn hoses and now the engine has gone to sleep Big Cry

Luckily the sales of goods act does cover second hand cars and within 6 months of purchase its deemed to be an inherant fault.

So trying to recover the best part of 7G ive had to spend between car parts, labour, car hire, towing charges etc.

A dealer who washed washed his hands of any responsability for the car even after the turbo went after 6 weeks of purchase and then all the other issues.

Im glad it was a dealer thats how i can proceed to court with him whereas private wouldnt have a chance.

It would still be very useful to get that contact just in case Smile

Great to hear that you may have a solution. Even better to hear you are exercising your rights under law. Too many dealers get off the hook by just ignoring complaints and hoping that the customer will not pursue the legal route.

I can't help being intrigued by the cause of your engine failure. Do you know how the oil pump failed? Not heard of that before on a TDV8. Could it have been related to the previous turbo failure? Appreciate you are likely to be a bit busy with sorting out the legal situation and the engine rebuild/swop but when time allows any further tech details would be a valuable addition to our collective knowledge on the forum.
Good luck with it all. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
