Timing Belt Quote

Hi All

I have received the following price from an independent LR specialist garage;

Front cambelt and tensioner replacement £285+VAT (parts and labour). We don't change rear the rear belt as it is not timed.

Does this sound right?

The dealership quote was around £1000.

I would have thought the issue would be the age/mileage of the rear belt would mean it would need replacing to prevent possible failure?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ask them to also change the other two idlers. Shouldnt charge much more to change them and they'll bring the price up to about £330+vat

It's a good price, but I would still be wanting to get the fuel pump belt changed.

theyre right insofar as it's not timed, but it is a bitch to do which is why most say dont bother. Bodsys Brake Bible

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

Slightly OT but I found an old receipt t'other day for a service and cambelt change I had done back in the mid-90s. Full 60k service and cambelt change was £180 incl VAT!

It probably felt expensive at the time... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll give them a call tomorrow about the idlers and fuel pump belt.

Yup I was quoted 300/400 quid of the top of his head for the belts done at my local inde ( he only gave rough quote as I bumped into while he was out walking his dog)

But he did say they dont bother doing the fuel pump belt as its a big job ( upping the bill) and they have never heard of one failing ( and if it does fail it doesnt do any damage to the car other than a break down due to no fuel )

I have changed dozens of cam belts front and rear and I would never advise a customer that it does not need doing, for one its a get out for LR if anything does go wrong, and 2 why would they recommend it needs doing at the stated times if was not necessary.

I have also changed a few oil pumps at the customers request because of the timing belt tensioner mount failing on the oil pump casing, again if its in the range of the oil pump casing possibly failing then I would not take the job on unless the oil pump was changed at the same time, as you can't be sure the casing is ok.
The rear belt is not that bad to do I have done worse ones...

Flack Thumbs Up

I have been quoted by Independent Landrover Services of Preston.

They have also quoted for some other repairs and their quotes have been significantly cheaper than the dealers quotes. TDV6 HSE - Rimini Red
