Tyres

A wee note, my last topic was locked so had a Question regarding a comment about my tyres on RRS from PADDI I think, the tyres on it are sagitator 275/45/r20, now the comment mentioned was to make sure they were at least 275/40.....and rated for the RRS, how do I no what they are rated for and why make sure they were 275/40 and not 45...... 2007 V8 HSE RRS STORNAWAY GREY

As a starter for 10, I'd check the sticker on the inside of he door or the handbook and see what it states and make sure the tyres comply to the sizes there Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

You want them marked XL, as they are the same size as BMW saloonsetc, and the RRS weighs twice as much. If you get 45 profiles your speedo would read wrong, and you would get a higher top speed but acceleration would be lower basically !
Hope this helps

Should read a minimum of 106y as load rating. It will be printed on side of Tyres after the size marking. So should read 275/40/20 106Y XL or Extra load. Anything less than 106 will not be adequate for a Sport. Thumbs Up

Looking at the scarce info on the web about this tyre maker, they make 275/45/R20 106H and 275/45/R20 110V XL

The former tyre has the correct load rating (106 = 950kg) but isn't marked as XL (Extra Load). The XL thing is related to loads and tyre pressures. Basically, in order to carry the load the XL tyre uses a higher pressure (and so needs to be stronger). As we need to run our rear tyres at over 40psi when running fully loaded, I guess that's why we're looking at XL tyres.

You can see in these tables (From Uniroyal via Pistonheads) that for a tyre with a load rating of 100, the XL tyre needs to be inflated to 2.9bar, where the standard tyre needs only 2.5bar.

I have to say that the XL issue is rather confusing and seems to be a tad counter intuitive - that the XL tyre carries less load at a given pressure compared to a standard load tyre. There must be something more to it than that and I'll see if I can find out anymore.[/url] 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Strictly, that is the speed and load rating in one: 106 is the load rating (950kg) and Y is the speed rating (186mph). Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Is that why they limited top speed to 140? From what's available to read, LR felt that the tyres were marginal at over this... Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

"Y" is the speed rating, "106" is the load rating. No need to whistle.

As it happens, the speed rating is actually the maximum speed at which the tyre will run whilst its carrying maximum load. By specifying a higher speed rating you effectively add a factor of safety. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

If it's marked as 110V then it would seem to be ok. Does it have "XL" or "reinforced" on it too?

The aspect ratio is taller than specified by LR but that's only a problem if you need to make a warranty claim - they might use it as an excuse to void a warranty claim relating to suspension. Other than that, it changes the gearing slightly. Some people run a taller ratio on 20s in order to improve the ride quality but also because they are cheaper than the correct tyres. I run 55 instead of 50 on my 19s but that's only because Pirelli don't make the ATR in 50 ratio. I never fit cheap tyres - a false economy in my opinion.

I shouldn't worry about posting in the wrong section - most new posters seem to these days and anyway, threads often seem to degenerate in to wibble... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yes - LR did limit the speed due to tyre safety - basically to give you safe operation, rather than the tyres being unsafe Mike

My whistle was because the tyre rating is 186 yet LR applied speed limit of 140. That's some margin Bow down 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
