Reduced weight of New Models could be a problem for caravans

I have just done an outfit match to compare the new FFRR and the previous model and based on the results I may have a problem towing my twin axle with the new RRS Sad

The previous 4.4 TDV8 had a 64% balance match well within the 85% guidance but the new 3.0 TDV6 is now 83% due to the weight saving - it follows that the RRS will be worse because it was lighter to start with and if they carry weight saving down the range the FL3 wont be able to tow anything bigger than a trailer Shocked

Caravan manufacturers are going to have to make lighter vans now Rolling Eyes

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

That would be about right. Go out and buy a £21grand caravan and then sit in it in the garden. Big Cry have only towed mine once with L200 and it wasn't fun, never a drama when on back of Sport. Oh well won't be buying a new car yet then Rolling Eyes
Obviously keep picking the wrong lotto numbers. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Gosh I would have always assumed that both range rovers would have been more than comfortable towing any caravan at all. Surely prior to the 400kg saving on the fullfat there was nothing else out there heavier and better suited to pull one.
Lighter caravan are needed anyway I think!

Perhaps that's why they have tow assist systems...

If LR test and rate them at 3500kg then they're good enough to pull 3500kg. The implications of stating that they're ok for 3500kg and then snaking to death at 2000kg isn't worth thinking about for a company like LR. The litigation would kill them.

I note that other 2000+/-kg 4x4, e.g. VW Touareg, are also rated at 3500kg. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

My old FL1 was rated to tow 2000kg but couldn't actually tow my last 1590kg caravan - it couldn't use 5th gear and nearly burnt the clutch out on a hill Shocked

Don't believe everything you read in the book Embarassed

I am sure the RRS can pull 3500kg but stopping it and controlling it is another matter - also reading on caravan forum about stability program's it appears they have some way to go before they perfect them Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Old Freelander was useless at towing. It struggled to pull a small horse box with average sized horse. Pulling away from standstill on a slope was impossible. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

My mums passant was a horrible car to tow with and the trailer (small plant trailer) often pushed the car but on the TDV8 RRS I barely even notice it's there, the new car RRS being so much lighter may help performance and economy but its towing ability surely will be degraded even if LR say it can still pull 3500kg RRS TDV8 HST

Not sure how they can claim it will tow 3500 cwt when the car is going to be 220 max. That's if it's 500 kgs lighter than old car. 75% of 2200 isn't 3500. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

If you take that logic...then the defender 90 shouldnt be able to tow anything it tows...and ive seen (and used)them to tow serious weights at the max.

Ive been in a 90 towing a FFRR with trailer, 90's towing 110, etc etc.

The new RRS will be fine as will the new FFRR. Mike

We are not talking about what it is capable of towing, it's what it can legally tow. The laws on towing have changed recently and with increase in Vosa check points, it's a case of be educated and aware unless you want to be offloading in some layby and getting juicy big fine to go with it. And just to throw a spanner in the works, unless you own the car on the trailer and the total weight is over 3.5 tonnes, you will be expected to produce a tacho printout as you are working for reward whether you are being paid or not. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

I think the towing capability is based on starting and pulling away on a 12% (1 in 8 ) incline. The proper 4x4 in the range all manage this easily because they have a low range box. The FL and Evoque don't so they struggle and thus have a lower capacity.

The interesting question, for me, is if the softRRS should have a lower rating than the properRRS because of the lack of a low range box or whether the automatic box is able to compensate by effectively "slipping the clutch".

The "85% rule" isn't a rule at all, it's a guideline designed to help prevent instability in the vehicle / trailer train. I think single axle trailers e.g. caravans, are more of a problem in this regard than twin axle trailers such as horse boxes and big flat bed trailers.

I believe that the legal limit of what you can tow is that which has been homologated by the manufacturer. So if LR say that the vehicle can tow 3500kg then that is what it can legally tow. The driver is still responsible for ensuring a stable load etc. and is at risk of prosecution if he fails to do so and causes an accident. According to VOSA there needs to be payment (even if "in kind" which means a beer afterwards would be payment) for it to be considered as being used for hire or reward. Also, "dual purpose" vehicles and trailers drawn by them are exempt from an operator's license. "Dual purpose" vehicles are generally defined as estates cars, 4x4, even crew cab pickups. The whole thing looks to be a potential loophole mess though. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Rrstdv8 is correct, what you say isn't I'm afraid...the max towing is set by the manufacturer set by vosa etc

Also the tachometer rules apply if you are being rewarded...in any way...but there are exceptions to that as well,

If you are moving something for a friend etc you dont need a tacho, you dont need to own the item on a trailer either, sorry and according to our transport manager moving something as an incidental eg one off with your own car...you don't need a tacho fitted. Thumbs Up Mike
