Large bulge inner wall

Fellow driver pointed out that the rear tyre looked like it was "shredding"
On closer inspection found there were two large bulges on the inner wall.

I am aware kerbing can cause this sort of damage on the exterior wall, not sure if same applies inner wall?

What can cause this?

I've had the car one week, came with new tyres.
I have since Kerbed that wheel slightly (yup, joys of London).
Also increased the pressure on all four tyres as I was going on a long journey with 2 adults, 2kids and boot full of luggage. After reading various threads on here for recommended pressure on 285/35/22's I put 42 in the fronts and 44 in rears.

Could any of the above contribute to such a damage?
If not I intend to speak with the dealer as its the 3rd problem to have surfaced in under a week of purchasing the vehicle. The other two are going to be repaired once I return from this trip.

I've uploaded photos to my gallery but can't seem to post on here throug the ipad. Pls have a look at my gallery for an idea of the bulge. Let me know your thoughts. 07 TDV8 + BAS map

Had the same problem after my son hit a pot hole in our other car. It looked like a hard boiled egg was sticking out of the sidewall of the tyre. The tyre kept loosing pressure and that's what alerted me - new tyre unfortunately. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

A pothole could cause that sort of damage. One of the problems with low profile tyres. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Great. So there's no telling how many times this is going to happen given the state of roads in my area.

What is it about pot holes anyway? I thought these cars are designed to handle rough terrain

Any recommended tyre brand that withstand this sort of thing longer?
Running on 22 inchers and will be mostly tarnac/road usage 07 TDV8 + BAS map

I have had 3 the same in under 2 years.
After the first I took out tyre insurance and have so far claimed for two new tyres at £240 each.
Cost of cover for two years about £250 .
Despite what others have said about this type of policy things will only get worse and I can claim up to 5 tyres at max value of £300 each.
T&C apply but not really a problem. Thumbs Up

They are. Ultimately it's not the vehicle that isn't handling the roads, it's the tyre. If you run a low profile tyre you increase the risk of it getting pinched as it deflects over an edge such as a pothole. The sidewall gets pinched between the rim and the edge of the hole and that causes a bulge if it's extreme enough.

The Sport wasn't designed to run on 22 inch rims - indeed, LR gave the 255/50/19 as the off road option which gives nearly 30mm more sidewall than a 285/35/22 does. That means it can deflect more without pinching.

It's a little unfair to blame the vehicle for your decision to run wheels/tyres it wasn't designed for don't you think?

What tyre brand are you currently running? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yes fair enough. I think for a moment I overlooked the fact that off road, you'd be driving with 19s, which would make breakfast out of pot holes it seems. Also worth pointing out 22 wasn't my choice but what the car came with. I do like the aesthetics but now, having read a few threads, think will downgrade to 20s with 45 general UHP.

These wheels are fitted with rotalla F110. 07 TDV8 + BAS map

Never heard of them. Sounds like a budget tyre on a premium vehicle - never a good thing in my opinion. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That would indeed seem to be the case. £85 inc VAT & del.
So onto next question. If I continue running 22, what am I best off with for mainly Tarmac use?

From what I've read in previous threads, I make the following
285/35 with either toyo proxes or grabber uhp?
I don't do many miles (sub 9k) a year so ride comfort and noise are higher priority than getting lots of mileage out of them. 07 TDV8 + BAS map

My view has always been that tyres are the most critical thing on the car - i value my life, so would just buy the best brand available, in your case that offer 22...buy cheap pay twice? Mike
