RRS Supercharged Vs TDV8

Hello

I am new to this site so apologies if these questions have already been answered in previous posts.

I’m looking to buy my first Range Rover Sport either the TDV8 or the Supercharged. From what I can see the Supercharged can be as much as £10k cheaper than the TDV8 (although the TDV8’s will be a couple of years younger than the early Supercharged models).

I live in central London and cycle or tube to work so I don’t have to worry about the cost of daily commute in the RRS. I would use the vehicle for weekend trips / fun.

I assume the MPG/fuel costs put most off the Supercharged and account for the big difference in price? Although if I consider a 360 mile round trip journey I would make now and again – given official MPG figures and recent fuel prices – the Supercharged would cost me around £25 more in fuel than the TDV8 – does this sound right?

Are there any other big differences in running costs between the Supercharged and TDV8 to consider? I understand servicing needs to take place every 6 months / 7500 miles (sounds quite frequent)? How much do these services usually cost? I’m hoping to pick one up with around 60-70k miles on the clock – are there any big servicing costs / replacements expected near this mileage?

All in all Im leaning toward toward the RRS Supercharged given the big difference in purchase price.

Any experience or advice greatly appreciated - cheers!

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Santorini Black

I could have written your post! I had a TDV8 on a 57 plate until about 4 years ago after which I bought a Jag XKR Cab. I missed the RRS, and about 18 months ago I changed again to an S/C on an 05 plate (and a Boxster S). I live just outside the M25 and commute to work by bicycle/ train. The times I use the car are at weekends and trips away. Even when I go to Arsenal most weeks I very rarely use the car, partly because I like to cycle and it's hassle free but also the cost of petrol is so high nowadays and in the RRS. I'm guessing a 70 mile round trip is probably costing £30!? I went through the same thought process as you and figured that petrol costs aren't a big, big issue for me given the low mileage so went for the much cheaper (but older S/C). If I'm being honest, whilst I like the power of the S/C, I would prefer a more fuel efficient diesel and perhaps even the TDV6 other things being equal.

Supercharged! Services are 12 months or 15000 miles which ever comes first. But test drive both and you will see which one you like. Good luck. Thumbs Up MY11 Autobiography supercharged. Santorini Black. Monaco interior. Rear screens. Privacy.
Gone MY08 Supercharged HST. Java black. Ivory premium interior. Rear screens. Privacy. Missed a lot.
Gone MY04 Discovery V8 Petrol ES Premium. Awesome.

There is no doubt that you will get more bang for your buck from a supercharged. There is realistically not much difference in fuel use doing short journeys, the TDV8 will be better on long runs. Diesel does low 20's in town, 28-30 on motorways and about 25 towing a 27 ft double axle caravan. Main issue would be resale, while cheaper to buy, the petrol will be harder to sell come the end and possibly lose money faster, so it's a choice only you can make.
So have fun trying both out and make your call after that 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈

cheers guys - appreciate the advice!

in an ideal world Id want to go with the more fuel efficient, but based on the mileage I think I would do, I don't think I could make the premium for the diesel model pay off. Then again, after getting behind the wheel of an RRS Im sure I would want to do much more driving than I currently think I will! as was said the S/C will be the harder to sell on though so need to keep that in mind

as for other options outside the RRS, then to my mind at least if you are going to run one vehicle then there is nothing that do what the RRS can - luxury, speed, off-road, 5 in back + luggage in comfort - and not in as much style! And I suppose as they say – you get what you pay for in life! We could all drive 50 mpg prius’s – but wheres the fun in that!!

Will have fun testing both models!

As a TDV8 owner I'd say SC all the way if your mileage is low. I came close to swapping but Im keeping the RRS and I bought a 10 year old 911 last week instead Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Not sure about supercharged but my TD was @ 400 for minor and 750 for major. Add set of pads per service to that as Brembos seem to eat pads every 15000 miles at @ 200 fitted. Tyres should be good for 20-30000 miles. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Thanks simple1

Like the "pre-owned" topic XXXAngelXXX !

Got this comment back from a dealer selling a RSS SC. Its ready for a service - I asked if anything major might need doing:
"Nothing major I think, just a general oil filter etc as it smokes a bit on start up indicating oil needs changing, once engine running after a second or 2 its fine indicating the dirty oil is just burnt off when started. Nothing to worry about and a full 6 month warranty is given"

Does it sound realistic?

Thanks

For your low anticipated mileage I'd personally say Supercharged. I faced exactly the same scenario when I bought mine 18 mts ago. I went for the Supercharged..............................................It's great, you'll love it !

Done 9000 miles only in that time and averaged 18 - 19mpg (mostly circa 150 mile motorway runs with occasional "town use".)

Had mine serviced by an independent at £295. Main dealer quote was around £480.

Hope this helps Thumbs Up Carl

Smokes a bit on start up???? Avoid with huge detour! Cars that smoke when cold usual indicate some wear in something. Charger does get bit oily and uses oil but shouldn't smoke. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

You can be honest and tell the agent to go Censored himself for trying to sell something like that.

Also, as far as I know supercharged is not difficult to sell since there are not so many around precisely for the petrol prices/consumption reasons. Which makes sense high demand for a short supply (both in relative terms). Vadim A.
