Does anyone have experience of extending your warranty?

Hi, I wonder if anyone has experience or views on the 'approved' extended warranty and the 'selected' extended warranty offered by Land Rover?

The manufacturers 3 year warranty on my 2010 RRS expires in a couple of months and I am wary of running it without any warranty. Therefore, I have a decision to make:

(a) sell it and replace it with a cheaper (albeit less exciting and less cool) car that I buy with the proceeds (with a little added) which would come with 3 years warranty; or

(b) extend the warranty ... LR offer an "approved" level for £1k p.a. For the first 2 years and then a "selected" for the third year.

I wonder, does anyone have experience of these warranties, has anyone taken one out and had to draw upon them? What do we think about the cover and will it, in your opinion, give me the peace of mind that I seek?

One specific, I have read that it excludes the entertainment system. Should I worry about this... what is the likelihood of it failing and how catastrophic would that be?

Finally, are there any typical, common faults, problems or fails that I can expect over the next three years? The car has 42k miles and I would expect to do another 40k in the next 3 years.

Any advice or views really welcomed.

John

find a local LR expert, and stick the 2k in the bank as a contingency fund.

My LR tech is the chief technician at the local dealer and he can fix a h3ll off a lot for 2k Laughing

Hmmm...I considered that and I can see what you mean, but that does mean that I would be gambling with an almost unlimited downside (if something horrible happened).

When you talk about a local LR Expert / Tech, does that mean someone other that at the LR dealership? I am aware that much of the work nowadays involves electronics, computer software upgrades etc. COuld someone outside of a dealership handle that stuff?

yeah I have a few options, local guy andy whyte is pretty good he runs a LR specialist in edinburgh. Mostly i use a guy i know who works a LR dealer and does homers at night in his garage. He's saved me a fortune on parts and labour over the years

Hi J-R,

I would strongly recommend the LR warranty option, whilst X5P appears to have a good support network to assist with his vehicles, I personally would always want a LR warranty as back up.

My previous RRS had a turbo fail on a long journey, LR assist recovered the vehicle, it needed the body taken off at main agent to replace turbo (took 4 days), I needed a hire car to continue my journey and then my RRS had to be repatriated by truck once the dealer had repaired it back to my home. All this would have been rather challenging / expensive without warranty. The cost of the repair was around £3k, not including recovery, hire cars etc.

For me it’s £1k well spent, if I get to the point where I could not afford to extend the warranty then I’d have to give serious consideration to driving something more reliable.

Good luck whatever you decide. --------------------------------------------------------

Take out the LR Approved Warranty or sell the RRS and buy a Landcruiser.

Very few people have access to a tame, cheap mechanic like X5pea does. If you have then great, if not see above. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
