When I start the car on a cold morning, sometimes its rev counter goes up and down a little and the idle running seems to be a bit bumpy - I can feel the turbulence. The car does it until the engines warms up (i.e. up to operation heat) and just in idle, (i.e. when I stop at the lights). Also, the instrument panel lights flicker a bit during this period, hardly noticeably. The whole phenomenon goes away when the engine gets warm (i.e. operation temperature) and the car does this rarely, 3 out of 10 times. The guys at the garage (LR specialists) did not find anything with the computer, no recorded faults are listed. One of my EGR valves has been replaced recently and the other is OK according to the computer. Has anyone encountered the same problem or heard about it? Your help is well appreciated, thanks.

Hi RRSCS, I've had the uneven idle running problem on my D3 TDV6 since it was new ( 7 yrs old now),and I remember trying another new one at the dealership way back then,and that did the same . It only does it during cold weather and only when it has been running for say 8-10 minutes from a cold start, goes away when fully warmed up. When I did an oil and filter change recently, I also replaced the oil temp sensor which is screwed into the side of the sump, as I had read of others with this problem,and some have found this cured it. I think it has reduced the fluctuation in revs somewhat, but still not perfect . The coolant temp sensor I believe also works in conjunction with this sensor,so that might also be something worth trying. Normally have these issues after having the battery disconnected. First cambelt I replaced, I thought the timing was out, causing it to run a bit odd with the fluctuating engine revs. IT eventually sorted itself out though.

It may be worth trying a hard reset. It will clear the engine ECM of its adaptive values, giving it a clean sheet to start with when you restart the engine next time

This is just a short update in the above matter. I left the car at the garage for a night to do a whole computer check on the cold start on the next morning, but nothing was found by the guys. Everything was perfect, the phenomenon wasn't produced - maybe it is true that LRs have souls . I hadn't had the problem before the check either but I wanted to have the computer check both on the cold start and on the warm up period - they even took it for a ride with the computer on - nothing. I had the oil temp sensor changed anyway, so we will see what comes out of it. Thanks again for the ideas, I will keep you posted if something changes. The hard reset is to be done if the uneven idle comes back .

i had the rev counter up and down a few months back had the maf cleaned out and was perfect after that, i have a range rover 4.2 supercharge
