To tow or not to tow...

We are looking at (my wife is) a travel trailer. This would allow us to go camping with our kids (dislike camping) and venture out (hate venturing) The travel trailer will weigh around 5,000 lbs. loaded (loath loading) I checked in with the dealer and he was rather skepical about the RRS managing the job (not fond of skepticism)

Any thoughts Question

5000Lb = 2267Kg

LandRover spec for Trailer with over-run brakes : 3500Kg

So why is the dealer sceptical?

The dealer "cautioned" me on pulling a trailer that weighed the rated limit for the RRS. It was an implicit suggestion that it could take its toll over a period of time.

but your not near the rated limit - I guess there is some logic to the dealers comments if you were actually pulling 3500Kg all the time

3500Kg is not a problem for the car either, the weight you are talking about is not an issue. It will be slightly more bouncy than say the D3 because of the shorter wheel base, but the car is designed to tow such weights.

As a rule of thumb, it's suggested that a "safe" towing limit is no more than 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle. So, for a 2,500kg car, that would be 2125kg, or c4,675 lbs.

The 3,500kg max braked towing weight referred to in the book is the maximum the vehicle could be expected to tow based on it's re-start ability on a 1:8 (12.5%) uphill gradient (in low ratio, if it has one), not a "safe" limit for prolonged towing on public highways.

Bob. RRS 4.2 S/C. Zermatt. Tints. Stormers. 150+ paint defects, wonkey bonnet, scratches, detached doorseal. suspension faults. To sum it up, a 60k pile of cr4p!
