Starting problem, battery or alternator

Hi all,

Over the last few weeks I have been having a problem with starting the car. If I leave the car for a day and come back the battery is flat as a pancake. I have a battery charger, connect this and car starts no problem. Stop and start the car over the day and all is good. However if I leave it for a day, dead !
This happened before about 6 months ago and through AA cover I got a new battery and all was fine. They checked the alternator and it was fine. They can see no discharge draining away on the battery.

Also since this started, when I jump in and put key in and start the car straight away (when it is starting ok) I get HDC warning message. If I turn the ignition on without starting the engine, let it run through prechecks then start car and all is ok. Could this be related to the the battery draining and getting charged several times and the car's computer getting its nickers in a twist.

I would have thought a new battery should last more that 6 months, any ideas what could be going on.

Thanks

Check your new battery is the exact same spec. as original; the Smart Charge electronics in alternators look for a match (Amp/hr and cranking rate) it can cause unusual glitches if its non-standard.

Did you get this sorted?

I've read in other posts that the upper tailgate (glass) switch is known to corrode and create a short which flattens the battery. Pull the rubber off and have a look at the switch.

Let us know how it goes. Thumbs Up

Hi Kav,

No it is still the same. My wife has been using the car so all been ok but as a test I left it from Friday when I got back from London to Sunday and it was flat. I will check the rear tailgate when back home at weekend, thanks.

Hi guys, sorry for the delay getting back to you.
Car still doing the same. Had AA out today and checked battery, it's fine. However they have found a drain on the battery when engine switched off. Don't know if it's related but I have had an issue with the Adaptive front lighting system, the warning light has been flashing on the dash but the system was working ok. I was mucking about the fuses today, number 56 and 61 and they looked ok, I took them out and placed back in and the dash light is now out. I will check for a drain on the battery tomorrow in the daylight, very surprised if that's all it was.
I am well pleased the dash light is now, the only the is the drain on the battery, fingers crossed this is all related and the drain has now stopped. 2017 Range Rover Sport HSE
