Hi all,

I'm looking forward to using this site in the future, as i have been doing for a time now for advice and info using searches etc, & now can't wait to get my new (to me) RRS!.

Just a few questions if you could help please, i'm in the market to buy a TD V8 looking at a 2007 "57" model with 59,000 miles on the clock, a good SH, wishbones etc all just replaced, just fully serviced with 12mts mot and 6mts tax, in silver that's just had the 2011 full upgrade exterior. (with some piano black bits inside and s/wheel to match etc)

Have taken some time to read the site a lot in the last few weeks for information and possible problems with this particular model have read lots of posts about what people have said both good and bad not looking to get in any slanging matches with what V6 / V8 to get etc, i'm not fussed about miles per gallon either, have my heart set on a TDV8.

I would like to get the best one I can, the the one I have mentioned seems pretty good, is from a dealer and also including a 15 month 4/5* warranty from that particular dealer. I know warrantys are sometimes not alot of good!, I hope this could be a good deal, just would like to know if there's anything I should really look out for, apart from the things i have read in the searches i have been looking into!.

Again, any info would be great as i seem to be "back peddling" now for some reason?, thinking of the problems that some have had with their TDV8's and then thinking should i just save up some more money and go newer and less miles?, but then no V8 for me sadly as you know, none after 2010.

Then again i have the voice in the back of my head saying go for another FFRR with a V8....

(Sigh)...i would like to make the best decision fist off, who would'nt!, with the help of the forum searches i have been doing its helped, but then again has mad me very aware!.

Good luck with your search, if at all possible i personally would save a few more ££££'s and go for the facelifted TDV8 they are coming down in price but with winter knocking on the door the trend will be that they may go up a little bit as 4x4's tend to do especially if we see any of the white stuff on the ground, it sounds like you have done a lot of your homework already which is good, keep searching there are plenty out there, i don't know what a 4 or 5* warranty is but i would try and get a sport from a main stealer with at least a 12 month land rover warranty. You will sleep better at night.

I have a 57 TDV8 and love it

Yes if you can justify another £10k then get a 2010 car (facelift) but remember. just because it's newer does not make it more reliable

Warranty must cover EGR's, turbo's and suspension bushes as a minimum  RRS gone

Also 2010MY TDv8's are quite rare and can be overpriced. Pre-2010MY TDv8 cars you must drive them over a rough piece of road to see if they need the front suspension/ steering bushes replaced - they can wear out very quickly and you will hear the front suspension rattling on a rough road. Not a hard job to fix but inconvenient for the owner! I reckon my 2007MY TDv8 is the best all round car I have ever owned, although my Evoque is extremely close, in fact far better on the handling front! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I hear what your saying, and yes prob not the best time of year to try and buy a 4x4, but needs must and i'm trying to make the best choice and not dive in heads-first!, so yep, have spent some time doing homework on them and reading / asking as much as possible, so not to be one of them newbies who just join up and ask all the questions as they cant be bothered to search and take the time out to read up!.

I'm not too sure what the warranty was, or who is with, but now i am going to call back and ask some more questions!, does a Land Rover approved warranty cover what awd man has posted?... thanks for your advice and input so far.

As i have asked just above, does the LR warranty cover what you said for the most basics?, like Turbo's EGR's & suspension issues?, or, is there a warranty i can buy that has a proven record of fixing these problems?, not just washing their hands saying some "get out" after the problems arise and you have paid your annual fee lol.

Would be good to know.

Well, i have two on offer, and they are the Silver 2007 57 TDV8 HSE 59000mls with 2011 conversion one as i have said about, all in at £22500 inc this warranty for 15mts (will now ask the in's and out's!).

or

a black 2007 07 HSE one thats totally standard, 64000 FSH T&T ready to go at £19000.(And hopefully get my own warranty cover if there's such a cover available that covers what awd man has stated for the basics, great advice by the way!)

Difficult choice you have there 76, regarding whats covered on the warranty, you would have to ask the warranty company, some do some don't The ones that do, also ask them if they cover consequential damage, and emissions cover. This is where a lot of warranty companies get out of a claim, if your EGR's go pop then they look at why they have gone pop and its usually a built up of soot, and if you don't have emissions cover then this is not covered (this is usually the case with 3rd party warranty companies) The L/R approved warranty i'm not sure, but if you ask the dealer they will give you a straight yes or no. Just make sure you read your warranty thoroughly.

The LR Approved Warranty is pretty comprehensive. It does cover some wear and tear - for example I've had ARB bushes replaced which might be considered wear and tear although as they redesigned them one might suggest it's an inherent fault.

Bear in mind the age/mileage limit on the two LR warranties. The "Approved" version is a better warranty but a 57-plate will not be eligible for it next time it's due renewing - you'd need to go to the "Select" version.

If your vehicle fits the criteria for the Approved warranty then it's worth going for in my opinion. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Recent owner of 09 TDV8, main dealer purchase with warranty.

Can I pick up on Tims point regarding worn front suspension / steering bushes - would this be picked up on the mot?

Yes such faults will be picked up come MOT time, infact, a dealer would pick up on it at service time too.

You can still get a L/R warranty if the current warranty has expired providing that you are well within the criteria which is set out by L/R eg age mileage and the vehicle has got full service history, you will have to pay for your car to be inspected by your local dealer first before they will sell you a L/R warranty just so that they arn't taking on a heap load of expence to themselves.

I have owned and loved both the pre-facelift TDV8 and the post-facelift TDV8 (which I still have). Both cars have been an absolute blast.

The earlier car had a LR extended warranty added to it and I had many successful claims, each time without any bother. Like other warranties it is actually underwritten by another company i.e. it's not LR but I guarantee having the 'official LR' logo on all the docs DOES count for something. Off the top of my head it paid for a new thermostat, a new starter motor, a new rear windscreen, a new steering column thingy and some other bits. That didn't make me think of it as unreliable - it was driven enthusiastically including some absolute blasts off road at Salisbury

When the 10 plate (strictly on road only!) runs out of mfr warranty in May 2013 I'll be adding LR extension straight onto it. I don't think the TDV8 is unreliable (of course, you hear horror stories) and the 10 plate has so far been rock solid. They replaced the front bushes at about 22k miles because of knocking but other than than it's been great. If your budget can stretch I would highly recommend finding a facelift TDV8 because the interior is just something special. As in, you enjoy sitting in the car! There aren't many around (they stop at 60-plate) and even less with all the toys (cameras, extended leather, dvds - all of which you can do without) so be prepared to pay up especially with winter fast approaching. It took me a while to find mine - thanks JamesLPR (now at a different dealer)!

The combination of the TDV8 engine + flappy paddle gearbox + gearstick to the left + adaptive dynamics enabled on the terrain response + dynamic response = OOOOOOOO LAAAAAAAAA LAAAAAAAAAAA. It's like Golf GTi rivalling fun, especially along a B-road.. a large part of your GRIN will be because you are making a 3 tonne car do some quite ridiculous, laws-of-physics-defying things

2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!

Take a test drive of the pre facelift TDV8 and the facelifted TDV8 and then make your own mind up and see if you think its worth the extra ££££'s. If its down to your budget then DON'T try the facelift model, because if it is out of your budget to start with, you will never be happy with the pre facelift choice.
