Buying a 2006 2.7 HSE

Hello everyone, This is my 1st post as I just came across this site today and hope to be an active member very shortly..

I went to view this the other day and handed over a deposit to buy it Thumbs Up

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/adv...?logcode=p

It does not have a LR warranty, but I am getting the LR used car check performed on the car before I hand over the cash.

The owner has owned the car for 5 years and has not had any major problems or any expense outside of wear and tear items.

My question is, should I still get a LR warranty for peace of mind (will only be a limited component warranty due to the cars age and costs over £800 ), or should I cross my fingers that this is one of the "good ones"?? what would you do?

Cheers

Steve

For me a warranty is essential, these are expensive cars which can be expensive to repair. My warranty is due for renewal in November and I'll be renewing. End of the day it's up to you and wether your willing to risk not having one, not having one the car might bite you!

Short answer: yes

Long answer: it may only cost you £19k to buy it but it's still a £50k vehicle and the bits to fix it are priced accordingly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

thanks guys,

Hmm..So you are effectively saying that there are No good ones... I was thinking that if it has been trouble free for 5 years then maybe I could risk it and save myself the £1000 total cost of warranty with LR.

Any other comments welcome

Thanks again.

Steve

The LR select warranty which I believe your car qualifies (approved warranty under 5 years old only) costs £745 or £895 including assist so where do you get the £1000 figure from or are you being charged for an inspection prior to obtaining a warranty?

My car was on face value a good one. When I bought it it was a year and a half old, one owner, 14k miles, fsh etc but it's had it's faults resulting in several warranty claims and an LRA assist.
Maybe the faults are about to occur on your car who knows, but I find it hard to believe it hasn't had suspension problems, mines been in twice in two years for that problem.

As said before its entirely up to you if you decide to take out a warranty, if not be prepared to take a hit in the wallet.
On the other hand you may be lucky and it'll cost you nothing Thumbs Up

Nik.

Hi and welcome to the site, Thumbs Up
I don't know what price you have agreed to pay for the motor, but i wouldn't be paying all that money for a 55 plate HSE without a warranty, however, i would definately get a warranty, the 1st claim on your warranty will probably cost more than the warranty itself, plus you will be able to sleep easier at night, also something else to bare in mind getting a 2006 model the expensive cam belt service will be due next year, 7 year old or 105000 miles.

Thanks Ady,

I wasn't aware of that 7th year big expense, any idea how much ££ the belt change would cost?

If you take it to a dealer then i don't think you will get much change from £900, If you take it to an independent garage garage then you are probably looking at around £6-700 mark including the service. you might get it cheaper if you shop around.

Thanks again Ady for that.

Nik- yes the cost was including the initial inspection as the car does not have a LR warranty currently

Spot on Ady, pentland quoted me £1000 mark including "body off"... The independent I use quoted £500 without removing the body for the belts? Then obviously the cost of the rest of the service.

In my humble opinion, the dealers are great in the first 3 years whilst you have the bomb proof manufacturers warrenty, and then going forward if you extend and maintain the history with them.

For anyone buying a 5 year old + sport I'd be inclined to say a good independent would be your best bet, they do the kind of jobs required on a car of that age? My independent just took on a young lad from the main dealer along the road, plenty potential, but hasn't done the half of the jobs that come up on older sports.... And let's not even start on the old defenders!

Again, just MHO!!

The tricky bit is finding a decent indie garage. I use one for the Skoda (and they did my Golf before that) as they specialise in VAG and are only 5 miles away. Not sure about letting them loose on the Sport though - I might ask them if they feel up to it.

There is a JR indie near Oxford so I kight try them once the warranty is up. Going to try the Stratford LR dealer for the next warranty job - Hartwells at Oxford have lost my trust after having to get stuff re-done after they'd done warranty work (and a service as it was due whilst they were doing warranty work). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The so called "expensive" service is somewhat of a myth. Two independent land rover specialists I know do it for approx £300,the belt that the body is taken off for(but only for ease)it can be done without is only an ancillary belt and even if it should happen to snap will cause no damage.Combined they have over 40 years experience and say they have never known one go yet.
If your not happy paying £750 upwards, try the AA breakdown repair cover,it's £69 for mine and gives you 5 claims per year up to the value of £500 per claim,£35 excess. They just last week paid for a new compressor on mine no quibble, you just have to make sure you follow their procedure, which isn't hard you just have to get an AA man to come and say yes the part has failed.I know £500 could easily be swallowed up on these cars but I just prefer to "self warranty".Ive had mine for nearly two years now and was quoted £950 for a warranty,so I just look at it that if something goes wrong ive £1900 towards it.
I only took the AA one as it was to cheap not to Thumbs Up

I'm lucky mike Aitken is only half an hour away, been a land rover only specialist for over 30 years and has a younger guy as his right hand man, who as well as being a land rover mechanic specialises in the electronic side of the newer models! That's where your money could get swallowed up trying to trace problems in my opinion?

Bang on fixit, exactly what mike told me regarding aux belt?

I've seen brand new FF's and sports in at mikes as there owners did not want the dealers let loose on them.

I compare it to the gas platform I work on, built and owned by BP for 45 years, ran and maintained by contractors and specialists!
