So I am seriously looking to move from my dull and uninvolving Volvo XC60 into a 2010 RRS TDV8 and have being doing some man maths on the additional costs this would involve. So for now ignore the purchase cost (33kish) and the subsequent depreciation and concentrating only on the additional outlay in fuel, insurance, warranty, service and other stuff between the two vehicles looks like this:

Fuel: Volvo averages 40 mpg to the RRS 20 mpg on 12k miles.p.a. comes out at additional 1.9k
Insurance: Being 44 y.o. has its benefits Volvo insurance 200 - quotes for RRS at 400. So there's small 0.2k
Warranty: Volvo has been reliable and dull no outlay on warranty; LR warranty 1.3k per yr (this is a guess btw!)
Service : Volvo 350 p.a.; RRS 700 p.a. So 0.35k premium
Other stuff : contingency of 0.5k for tyres etc

Adding this up comes to 4.3 k per annum (or 355 pcm)

Which was more than I had thought before I did the man-maths!! Does this sound about right - your views and counsel would be appreciated

My comments:

You could get 30mpg from the RRS

You only need to service every 15K so more like £400 a year service

If you get a late 2010 one you will still have a years warranty

If you can afford it do it.Were a long time dead,within the last 18 months I've been to the funerals of 4 mates,3 cancer(diagnosed and gone within 6months)1 motorway accident and another woke up with locked in syndrome,all in their 40's.Enjoy life while were here.

I get 25mpg everyday 'round town' use or 28/30 on a run out of my V8.

I thought Land Rover warranty was nearer £750 pa. If you buy from a dealer you'l get 12 months from LR's Approved used car system; I bought another 3 years for £1,500 which means its covered for 4 years in total.

Service could be £700 unless you use an independent; and, if you have a warranty must be every 12 months or 15K whichever is soonest.

Don't see why tyre cost should be that much over the Volvo.

Since you're into 'Man Math' you forgot to divide by 2 before telling anyone who is female !

This isn't going to help, but that's not man maths, that's sensible maths. Man maths is where you justify something for the wrong reason !

I justified myself buying a second hand supercharged over a tdv8 on the basis that the additional purchase cost of the tdv8 would pay for fuel for a while

2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!

Costs are as follows but obviously depend on how you use your car. Average annual service is @ 750 which includes a complete set of pads, tyres every other year or 15000 miles and get average of 18 mpg but.... I tow a 30 ft caravan most weekends, live in a town so journeys to and from office usually in heavy traffic. Factor in a set of discs every second pad change and 465 road tax and it's not a cheep car to run but it's the most comfortable way to cover miles.
Sad to see mine gone, but new 4.4 tdv8 full fat is a monster..... 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱

maths ? should have thought about that before buying my S/C. Then I pressed the stalk button that changed the dash LED display to 11.2MPG !!  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

I'm not obsessed at all,we just seem to be having a run at the minute Another lad I know had to be airlifted from Cape Verdi 3 weeks ago with a broken neck after a wave picked him up and spear tackled him into the sea bed.My point was we just don't know what's going to happen tomorrow so we might as well enjoy and have nice things today
