Sounds like tin can dragged under + feels like gritty wheels

For the last couple of days when driving along and when there is a wall or bush along the side of the road, I hear mild screeching noise bouncing back off the wall/bush, I wanted to speak to the dealer about (perhaps break pads wearing out) it....BUT today about 5 times in my first long drive in weeks I felt 2 things as indicated in the title:

i. I thought perhaps under the sport, a tin can with a string somehow got caught up and it was rattling around under the car
ii. The left hand wheels (cant determine which one) felt extremely gritty and as if its going to collapse

I looked underneath (by raising the suspension) once I got to my destination AND when I got back home...nothing under the car nor anything near the wheels

I will contact my local LR dealer in Gatwick (about 10 miles away) tomorrow to have a look...meanwhile any ideas what it could possibly be? (I hope I have described my experience well enough) so I can be prepared for the shock (or lack off) or maybe even go to a non LR dealer instead Oh wow

Sounds like stones trapped in the brakes, Quite a common problem. The best thing is to try and throw them out by hard braking - obviously don't do this on a street with people behind you Whistle Find a safe place and accelerate then brake hard. It usually gets rid of any stones or grit. This has happened to me a few times. Sometimes they will be thrown out after just a few attemps, other times it takes ages or you may end up with a visit to a garage to get them removed. Thanks for the explanation. Perhaps its stones but the rattling and then the incredible feeling feels really bad so Im a (no expletives) bit scared that it could be worse (what else could it be) than stones in the brakes

Perhaps a visit to the LR wont be needed. I will ask a local (nice) garage to check it out tomorrow. In these tough times, the credit card is looking both fragile and evil Oh wow

Trust me mate it CAN sound horrendous. The last time I had it I was in the middle of nowhere on a single track road in the highlands and it sounded like I had a mixture of tin cans on string(as you described) and really loud Squeeling when I turned the steering. From what you've described I am pretty certain this is your problem, but, hey, if you are worried then of course, take it to a garage to be checked out. Better safe than sorry. Oh, and yes the brakes felt terrible as well! 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Thanks again...

Strangely I cannot correlate WHEN the noise appears but it wasnt on the motorway...its just when I was close to my destination (5-30mph) and when I came close to home (30-1mph) Oh wow

Does the sound change if you apply the brakes (stuff between pads and disc)?

Is the sound cyclic e.g. wheel speed (brakes worn, CV joint) or faster (prop shaft joints)

Also - does the sound vary when turning? Between left & right turns?

Could be wheel bearings, the wheel wobbles/grinds until you hit the brakes which temporarily straighten everything.
Lift wheel off the ground, grab wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock then try to move it by pushing top towards engine and bottom towards you and vice versa.
Try also 3 and 9 o'clock.

Any play will likely indicate worn bearings.
