Sounds like stones trapped in the brakes, Quite a common problem. The best thing is to try and throw them out by hard braking - obviously don't do this on a street with people behind you Find a safe place and accelerate then brake hard. It usually gets rid of any stones or grit. This has happened to me a few times. Sometimes they will be thrown out after just a few attemps, other times it takes ages or you may end up with a visit to a garage to get them removed. Trust me mate it CAN sound horrendous. The last time I had it I was in the middle of nowhere on a single track road in the highlands and it sounded like I had a mixture of tin cans on string(as you described) and really loud Squeeling when I turned the steering. From what you've described I am pretty certain this is your problem, but, hey, if you are worried then of course, take it to a garage to be checked out. Better safe than sorry. Oh, and yes the brakes felt terrible as well! 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Does the sound change if you apply the brakes (stuff between pads and disc)?

Also - does the sound vary when turning? Between left & right turns? |

Could be wheel bearings, the wheel wobbles/grinds until you hit the brakes which temporarily straighten everything.
