Please Help!!!! Just lost power on motorway!!!! Cruise Prob?

Hi I have just been fiddling with the cruise control on the motorway and all of a sudden I lost all power and a message came up saying that something had switched off or disabled?? Not sure what it said to be honest I was in too much of a panic!!

There was no throttle response at all and I coasted to the hard shoulder. I switched the engine off and re started and it was fine again. Please can someone tell me what the heck happened.

Thanks

Mike 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

range rovers are like microsoft computers, u just switch em off and on again and carry on regardless.

if you concerned get it into LR and they will be able to see the fault code recorded

Hi X5

It scared the hell out of me to be honest. No throttle at all not even a crawl/limp mode.

Just no response whatsoever but no warning/stop lights!! 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

This happened to me the other day too various times, no lights or codes Mines going into lr as soon as I'm back home! LR assist however won't pick it up as they say car is drive able so unfortunately has to go to local stealer as opposed to LPR!

Ok here is what has just developed..........................Doing 60MPH in cruise control so I started to accelerate to get the cruise to drop out (After 60 seconds I think??) after about 40 seconds a message came on saying "Engine System Fault" but no loss of power this time.

Any ideas?

Lol Laughing Thanks Ady!!!!! It had the EGR replaced 2/3 weeks ago apparently.

I had it plugged in to a mates diagnostics today and it came out with no fault codes even tho it was still saying "Engine System Fault" on the dash!!!!

I have now decided that it is nowt to do with the cruise control but it seems to show the fault when I am doing a good speed!!!!!!!! like 70+ Razz Razz if you know what I mean!!

But here is another thought as to what the fault could be and please someone let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree!!...... I was reading my manual about the Refrigirator in the arm rest and it says that if the refrigirator switches off or wont come on whilst the engine is not running then it means the battery volts are low. So as you can guess my refrigirator wont switch on with the engine off but as soon as the engine is started it will switch on!!

I am now wondering if I have a faulty battery....Is it possible that a faulty battery would bring up an "Engine System Fault"? The battery looks like the original LR battery so could be 7 yrs old!!

Any help appreciated.

Thanks 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

Mike,

I had a not disimilar problem a couple of years back in 2.7 TDV6 RRS.....I was driving along at around 80Mph on a motorway and all of a sudden lost all engine power....had to force my way across 3 lanes of traffic onto the hard shoulder, somewhat shaken. Turned the car off then on again and all appeared to be ok, but it then did the same thing 3 miles further down the road. Needless to say I would have been all the more furious had this happened to my wife whilst she was driving alone as she would probably have panicked and ended up stopped in lane 3 on the M4.....not good.

When LRAssist/AA turned up, the bloke couldn't even drive the car up onto the low loader as there was virtually no drive/power whatsoever. I confess that this was the final straw and why I got rid of the RRS, although i'm keen to get into another one (albeit hopefully more reliable!).

Turned out it was a damaged/severed wire going into a junction box and it appeared to have been a fault waiting to happen..

I'd also been stranded by faulty EGR valves a few months prior to this so they weren't the problem in this instance and there wasn't even the option of 'limp' mode!

Hope you get it sorted Thumbs Up

JT

Interesting post! I was travelling on the M4 yesterday towing my twin axle caravan doing about 60+mph, I switched on cruise control and within a few seconds got the "engine system fault" message and the resulting loss of power, I pulled over switched off the engine waited a few seconds and re started, the message had cleared and I drove the 100 miles home with no further issues.

I took the car into Landrover this morning and the very helpful manager plugged in the diagnostic kit but could not find any clear reason for the problem, he did say that "4 Tow Bar electric" codes had been recorded but could not relate this to the issue. He said I will just have to see if it happens again!! Very worrying driving the car expecting it to break down!!

Jim

Just an update on the fault.....Well I have had it plugged in to a diagnostics and guess what...... No Fault!!

Hoping that the diagnostics at the specialistis not up to the job I have taken it to another highly recommended specialist with better diagnostics.

He now says that the 2nd EGR Valve is faulty and needs replacing..(Under a warranty I have)..So does anyone know if a faulty EGR would Result in this complete loss of power?

I had suspected the battery may be faulty based on the fact that the fridge does not come on until the engine is running.

Any opinions? 2009 3.6 TDV8 HST

The fridge doesn't come on until the engine is running, and then when you turn off the ignition, the fridge will keep running for about 10/15 seconds.

A while back I used to have a Disco 3, which, now and again exiting the Mersey Tunnel, used to lose power and go into limp home mode..I would then stop on the hard shoulder, restart the car and all would be ok. I reckoned it was the auto payment collection beam (which automatically deducts the tunnel fee from a plastic card) upsetting the computer on the D3. Just maybe, your cars electronics threw a wobbler after receiving some odd signal, maybe from an overhead gantry or whatever!!
