I would assume there is an override that says 'you can't do that' above a certain speed.

is it just not like switching off with the key (which is terrifying!!) engine cuts out, power steering fails and the steering lock locks!!, but then as it is an electrical gadget there will be some sort of backup!!

I have tried the EPB whilst moving. It works. It uses the ABS system to work all the brakes as I understand it. If you had a failure of the hydraulic system then the EPB could also be used to stop you but it would be a bit slower, obviously.

Not sure that is true X5.... I often pull on to the drive and hit start and at rest the gear selector automatically finds park before shutting down |

On the 8 speed box, when you come to a halt with it still in D, then press the stop/start button, the dial goes into P as it shuts down, did this by mistake one day I wouldn't like to try it on the move though. |

Never thought about the post 2012 MY , suppose that would make sense as the select is electronic but again it won't stop the engine until the car has stopped moving i assume..... pre 2012 the select is manual as I'm sure your aware. |

on a freelander2 the engine dies if you press (and hold) the stop start. steerig lock stays on unless you remove the fob from the dock. |
