I am tempted by getting a private plate my initials, year of manufacture then RRS but so far have always found a better use of £800.

Never had a private plate, most of the time I look at them and think "what is that meant to say?".

Having said that the plate "V8" is on an 80's Aston round here and that does look cool. Graham

In answer to the OP: No, haven't got one because I've never seen the point. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I think what most people who don't get it don't realise is that they are such a good cash investment much better than anything a bank would give you and with most changing hands for cash no tax to pay, just look at the demographics at any auction and which plates go for the most cash and then ask yourself again who is daft. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Most on here don't appear to have bought them as investments though, so whilst it may be true that some sell for decent money (and some for frankly obscene amounts!) how many are actually sold for big profits? That's a genuine question - it's not something that I've ever considered.

And as for using them to take the age off the car, is it that big a deal if people know how old your car is? I mean, really? Is the opinion of strangers that important?

It seems to me that, for many people, cars are an extension of their ego - particularly true of young people (male and female alike these days it seems). Which might be why road rage/aggressive driving is so common...

I guess I'll never understand people Rolling with laughter

And before anyone thinks this is an invitation to flame, I see the whole thing the same as I would listening to someone speaking a language I don't understand - I don't understand but I don't hold it against them because of it. I just simply don't understand. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yep - present from my other half and just think it looks a bit more personalised, also easier to remember!

I think the old adage , you need money to make money applies here, yes you could probably make a decent return on a plate if you spend £3/4k on a three letter, one number plate, but mine which is B8 and my 3 initials would probably take a year to sell and yield £300 pound in 15 years, I would have got more in an ISA ! I have never bought anything as an investment, I buy cos I like something, my kids can get the benefit when I am gone!!
Cheers

Yes, I've got one, but it came with the car. F11NEL. The woman selling it asked if I was offended by it - had to say no as it didn't mean anything to me. "Effin' Hell" she replies. Perhaps a bit too subtle, but memorable.
