Am I ripped off by Land Rover Stratstone?

Hi,

I own a Range Rover Sport 2009, 3.6 TDV8.

The 3 years warranty runs out in a couple of weeks and yearly service is due in too.

I dropped the car to the LR Stratstone dealer in London for MOT and service. They called me and said that:

- one of the front alloy wheels is faulty and needs to be replaced with a new one for £571
- the break fluid needs to be topped up or changing (don'remember) for £186
- one wiper needs to be adjusted for £17
- service costs £499
- MOT i think they said £39
- my spare wheel has been stolen and they quoted me £751 including the winch.

1. I don't think the front alloy wheel is faulty because just 2 days before I changed all the tyres at Kwik-Fit where my cousin is working. My cousin changed all tyres and did the balance of all wheels but none of them was faulty. After changing the tyres I did not drive much, only about 10-15 miles and I am sure that I did not damage the wheel. What do you think?

2. I don't think that the break fluid needed anything.

3. I don't think the wiper blade needed ajusted.

What is your advice on this? !!! RRS TDV8 !!!

Hi "duckworthparts",

I asked them to do the MOT and the service and also asked them for a quotation for a spare wheel + winch.

They did a free health check and came up with:
- one of the front alloy wheels is faulty and needs to be replaced with a new one IF I WANT FOR £571
- the break fluid needs to be topped up or changing (don'remember) IF I WANT FOR £186
- one wiper needs to be adjusted IF I WANT FOR £17

They convinced me over the phone that the car cannot have an MOT with a faulty wheel and no break fluid. I believed them but than I realised that regarding the alloy wheel that must be a confusion.

I am suposed to pick up the car from them today or tomorrow and I will tell them that I am more than sure they lied to me. I will also show them the receipt from Kwik-Fit whre clearly shows the new tyres and all wheels balanced. !!! RRS TDV8 !!!

Did you get them to carry out the work Toni ?

Can only comment on the spare wheel/winch item, but i believe Dan at Duckworths (who seems too professional to canvas in your thread Thumbs Up ) can sort you out a space saver and winch for around £180. Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

But you still have no new MOT cert till it's replaced (as far as Statstone are concerned)

I'd take it to another MOT centre and ask for a 2nd opinion. (on both items) RRS gone

winch is only 80/100 quid from parts IIRC and takes 15 mins to fit. Spare alloy and tyre wot be cheap at dealer prices..... buy one from ebay and ull have the job done for 200 quid.

If there was a significant fault with the wheel and the car was not breaking then they are right it will simply fail the MOT. Low brake fluid however is not a MOT check so the fact that its low should not come into it if the car is braking within the limits.

Youve had ur pants down for a Wheel from LR, a spare wheel and a whinch, the rest of it looks pretty ok to me.
You authorised the work so u cant complain when you get the bill, only come back i would suggest is if they have advised you to get work done that was not required...... u gotta remember your paying LR labour rates @£100+ an hr and they will quote min of an hr.

Personally i would have thanked them for the advice got the service done and mot'd the car else whre after buying a wheel on ebay had it been required for the car along with a spare, a winch from the parts dept and fitted it myself.

Hi "Beancounter_74",

I allready told Stratstone to fit back the spare wheel and winch because I am going on holiday so I needed one.

But 2 minutes ago I asked Stratstone for an update, if they did not fit yet the spare wheel I will tell them to forget about and not to fit it then.

The size I need is 275-40-20, the original one was 19" but I will prefer to have a 20" wheel spare same as he others.

I will let you know. Thank you. !!! RRS TDV8 !!!

Id be careful how you word that, if you walk in and call the service advisor a lier , id suggest you wont get anywhere. A receipt from kwik fit only says that the guy who works in kwik fit, who chances are isnt a mechanic managed to balance the wheel a few days before..... u could have damaged the wheel on the way to dealers for all they know. You've not told us what's wrong with the wheel, but it would have been my first question to the dealer when advised it was faulty.... bear in mind that you can balance a wheel that is not structurally sound.

Hi "awd man",

Last Friday they said "MOT done" but later on I was called again and told that they did not replace the faulty wheel with the right one, by mistake they put a 2012 wheel so today or tomorrow they will put the right one.

My concern is that I think these LR people just rip off people, I don't want to blame someone for nothing but I have no other explanation to what happend now. How can you explain? My cousin working at Kwik-Fit he done himself the balance, did not find any problems but next day LR Stratstone says "the car vibrates because of a faulty wheel". Because the car is still under warantty, my cousin sugested to me to do the MOT and service to the main dealer, this is why I went back to LR Strastone. !!! RRS TDV8 !!!

Ah, fair enough. As x5pea says, getting a replacement wheel and tyre (or two in your case) was always going to be a costly exercise. Clearly you were time constrained though.

I think to be fair, the best way to resolve all of this is to pay them a visit in person and have a calm discussion about things.
Put your views over sensibly and I'm sure you will get genuine responses back. Then, if you're not happy you can then take it up with the principle or even LR H/Q.
Trying to resolve things like this over the phone is a always difficult, face to face is a lot easier.

Hope you get it sorted out satisfactorily Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Hi "x5pea",

Well, I am not going to walk-in to call the service advisor a lier that is for sure and because I have no evidence or photos of my wheel of course I cannot do anything BUT just a lesson learned to make sure next time I go to a recomended dealer or I keep some evidence.

Regarding the wheel they called and said "the passenger alloy wheel has a bulk and cannot be balanced, needs to be replaced". I just cheked the day I changed the tyres at Kwik-Fit and it was just a day before I brought the car to the main dealer. I drove about 30-40 minutes on A12 and did not feel any vibration in the stearing wheel or the car pulling on one side so no signs of something wrong. Before I had the tyres changed I also did not have any problems. !!! RRS TDV8 !!!
