Strange vibration at cruising speed

Folks - advice/help required. before we start this IS NOT a wheel balance issue!

On 2 occasions in 4 days I have been on the motorway, 70 to 80 miles and hour - been travelling for 1/2 hr and 15 mins - I get a strange vibration, not through the steering wheel, across the whole of the car (a bit like rear wheels unbalanced), after a couple of minutes it fades away.

This morning I drove all the way to Birmingham, no problem.

Bizarre.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

i ve had this before and yes it was parking brake module playing up. Check the rear hubs for heat damage.I replaced my shoes after this happened as they had melted Mine only did this once. New module £350 ish?? this is not an uncommon issue.

Was in the dealers yesterday to check out the strange vibration. It isn't happening very often but we have identified now that it has caused bad wear on a very thin strip of the inside edge of both rear tyres. this is variable around the circumference, not consistent as you would normally get with a tracking issue.

The dealers suggested a 4 wheel alignment and 2 new tyres as a)it could be tracking and b)it could be a dodgy batch of tyres (these are toyo proxes).

After a bit of amiable discussion we both agreed that blowing £1000 on 2 ideas that were at best a long shot probably wasn't the best way to go.

Mike at Land Rover Leeds is now referring it to their top technical people to see if this issue has arisen before. It would be helpful if anyone on the forum has actually had this repair done and through which dealership so I can refer them on.

You could try a 4 wheel allignment first. Should be around £25/30 ish from a decent tyre place.

You may also want to look at balancing at the same time.

They may have been perfectly balanced to start to start with, but if there is now uneven wear on them, this could have thrown the balance out over time. RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

Sorry - meant to say in my earlier post - all 4 wheels were rebalanced last Friday to rule this variable out... Jaguar XKR Convertible

In that case the wear on the inside edges of the rears could be due to a very slight toe out on that axle? I'd go down the cheaper laser alignmnet route first before even considering changing the tyres. I highly doubt any manufacturing defects in the Toyos would be the cause. RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

Has camber adjustment on rear axle been checked?

They went through a full check of all suspension and rear of the car and came up with nothing. I'm thinking if it's camber or tracking Ghent it would be consistent wear around the circumference of the tyre rather than worse in some spots than other. Just don't get it

Anyway, drove all the way back from Bristol with no problems... Jaguar XKR Convertible

this wont be the 4 wheel alignment, as ive just been through two nearly new back tyres in 800 miles Shocked
the inner edges of both tyres were through to the cords, the car was 4 wheel aligned when i bought it, as i noticed it was pulling slighty to the left, but the company that did it obviously know nothing about complicated suspension set ups.
I took advice from a Indie, who sends all there cars here http://www.protyre.co.uk/outletsdesc.aspx?id=15091
and he set it up on the machine, as well as the front being out, the rear was crabbing to the right to such a degree, the the digital readout went off the scale.
Anyway, 30 minutes later, it was all sorted, with a printout, for £50
Anyway, my main point is that my car was so bad out of synch, yet i have never expierenced the problem the OP has 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

A couple of years ago, over 7,000 miles all four Pirellis on my TdV8 developed an odd wear pattern over a narrow band on the inside shoulder where the tread meets the sidewall. In the end one of the rears wore right through to the wire in several places and the profile looked as if the tyre had been rubbing on something. (it hadn't). This was all after several four wheel alignments by the dealer.

Had them sent back to Pirelli and althought they didn't accept any liability, they contributed the value of the remaining life to the price of a new set of tyres. My conclusion - a manufacturing defect in a batch of tyres.

The intermittent vibration reminds me of another tyre defect which I had on a Freelander 1. That took ages to find and was due to a manufacturing defect which had left slight bulges around the sidewalls on some Goodyears.

Hope this helps.

2012 white RR sport autobiography

Hi, after waiting 9 months to get my 2012 autobiography finally came in 2 weeks ago and I'm having the same problem with a very rough ride. They balanced all 4 tiires last week and still the same, only has 500 miles on it, So taking it back in next week. It also revs high and low at stops and they said that was normal. Well I had another 2012 supercharged RR sport that I traded in and had no problems on the ride or reving high, low at stops. Was wondering if you have found a fix on the rough ride.

Thanks Mike Mike G.

Seems to be a common issue, balancing won't cure it, you need to get the car properly aligned on a 4 wheel alignment system.
There are a few threads on here (mine included, although mine was steering drift) that this has worked for Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Geo is a work of art and requires someone who really understands how to use the equipment. I had a s2000 and a proper geo setup absolutely transformed the car a rubbish one made it worse. Ideally the rrs should be set up with the engine running ensuring the suspension is at driving height, not off so the vehicle tris to level its self. Before getting the geo done check the vehicle height is the same all the way around. we could do with a sponsor who understands how to set up the rrs. Usually takes at least an hour to set up as done properly it should be set then driven then reset again.
Mine currently wears the types on the inside and randomly get the vibration at 80mph but in France at the moment and have had geo done once already, fronts are done but rears still not set correctly. Just need time to find someone capable .
Sorry about the strange spelling, currently using the hotel wifi on my phone
