Looking to buy a G4 RR Sport...few questions!

Hi all,

I have found a G4 Edition RR Sport I quite fancy, it is a 55-reg (2006 Challenge) model so is a 4.4 V8 engined model. It was never actually used on the Challenge, was just a support vehicle, but has all the kit which makes it ideal for my trip to Morocco later this year.

I do have a couple of questions:

1. LPG conversion - I would definitely be looking at fitting an LPG kit to the vehicle, but am getting mixed reviews/opinions on this. I know the 4.2 S/C models do not last well on LPG, but some say the 4.4 V8 is ideally suited whilst others say it is not. Would getting an LPG conversion with a Flashlube kit be OK in terms of engine longetivity?

Does anyone here run their 4.4 V8 on LPG and have they had issues directly related?

2. Cruise control - as it is fitted with Adaptive Cruise Control which requires the front parking sensors, but it also has a winch on the front which removes the centre two sensors, the cruise contol does not work. Would it be possible to get this to work by refitting the front sensors somewhere else whilst still keeping the winch? If not, is it possible to get 'non-adaptive' cruise control working on the car?

Lastly, anything else I should look at either specific to the G4, 4.4 V8 or RR Sports in general?

Cheers!

I used to run my G4 Sport on LPG before shipping it out here, covered 50k miles with it. Didn't have a flashlube kit as I took the approach of if the exhaust valve guides failed I'd have the uprated heads fitted by JE Engineering to cure it once and for all. To be honest I was never overly happy with the conversion, but doing 30k miles a year in the car it made a difference to running costs and I bought it already converted. If you're thinking of taking it to Morocco though I'd not be fitting LPG, but a long range fuel tank instead. Bear in mind they're not particularly frugal on LPG, I used to manage about 13-14mpg at best, whereas on petrol it was 19mpg.

The cruise control should work. Mine has the adaptive cruise & it works fine, albeit I hate the adaptive setup and would far rather it just had normal cruise. To make the parking sensors work you need to drill 2 holes in the winch cradle and fit 2 sensors in there along with the wiring loom (the rest of the loom is there already & connected up) then have the sensors activated by LR. My dealer tried to activate them but couldn't get it to work properly, so switched them back off again. As I recall it was because I haven't fitted 2 in the winch cradle so the outer ones are seeing it, I guess they need turning or something.

Which one are you looking at buying ? I know there's one on the G4 owners club for sale at the moment. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Thanks Mike, who did your LPG conversion? Did you ever have any LPG-related issues?

I wonder why it ran so uneconomically on LPG - typically they should only be 10-15% less efficient than on petrol, not 25-30%!!

I will wait until after Morocco before fitting the conversion, last thing I want is a breakdown due to a fault in the LPG system. Will be taking 2x 20 litre jerry cans of fuel on the trip.

As for the cruise control, I would really like to get it working so I'd need to buy 2 sensors and attach them to the winch mount, correct? Are you saying your ACC works even without the centre front sensors connected? As it says on this one it could not function, apparently the current owner took it back to the dealer when they first got it and was told it was because of the missing centre front sensors due to the winch.

Yes, that's the car I'm looking at - do you know anything about it? - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

Adaptive cruise (ACC) uses a separate system to the parking sensors. There's a "box" in the mid height radiator intake on the passenger's side which houses the radar.

I was under the impression, however, that ACC is not compatible with winches in general although presumably LR may have fitted a winch that would not get in the way of the ACC. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

^^ +1

The ACC radar is in the void above the number plate (Passenger side see picture below)

The winch might obstruct this hence why it may not work.

Parking sensors are totally different with not enough range

Aaah, OK - I was under the impression (from the current owner) that it was the central parking sensors that caused it not to work.

In which case, what would cause the ACC not to work on this G4 Sport but work fine on Mike_S's G4??

Not fussed about front parking sensors TBH, I can see where the end of the bonnet is just fine without!! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

I would guess the seller is well aware that the ACC module itself is broken somehow and hopes that the story about the parking sensors will ease the mind of potential purchasers - after all, a couple of parking sensors are quite cheap; the ACC module won't be.

A while back someone found that the ACC radar sensor mounting bracket (hidden behind the plastic housing you see from the front) had been bent down towards the road. Maybe that happened on this one when the bumper was off for the winch mounting - or then again maybe it really is broken!

Hi
I don't know if the TDV8 is different to the V8 but the ace works on the 08 models but not the parking sensors

It was converted by a place near Newport in South Wales. The chap knew his stuff but hadn't converted a 4.4 V8 before so I'd say it could've been a better conversion. I'm sure with a better set up system I could've got maybe 15mpg, but it was forever chucking up the engine management light with the same fault codes, running rich or running lean. This is because the sensors are very sensitive and LPG trips them. Since taking the LPG system off, the light's never come back on. If you speak to JE Engineering they'll be able to explain why the light comes on. There is another chap who posts on here occasionally and gets very defensive over LPG'd D3's & RRS's, saying it shouldn't be an issue and all that's needed is a flashlube kit. I tend to disagree. Each to their own.

I'll carry a couple of 20 litre jerrycans if I go out 'bush' here in Oz, longterm I'll likely go for a long range tank.

The original owner's been had by the dealer then. The ACC works fine without the middle 2 sensors, they have nothing to do with it working or not. As others have said here, the ACC unit sits behind the bumper and I'm guessing it's failed or isn't connected. As I understand, a fair few of the G4 cars had the ACC switched off on the Challenge, with some then needing £2k+ of warranty work to fix it when they were sold off, which entailed a fair bit of persuasion by the next owners with some of the LR dealers. The previous owner of mine was one of the persuasive ones so it worked when I bought the car. With mine, at my request the dealer tried to activate both the ACC & the parking sensors and it wouldn't have it, I could have either one or the other but not both.

Frayed knot, although it would appear to have been well looked after. Worth a punt as long as it comes with all the gear. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

They're pretty honest sellers on the whole and they have owned the car since 1,500 miles, so I would suspect they were fobbed off by the dealer when they bought it with the same reason they have given me and been none the wiser!

The dealer will be refitting all the G4 accessories anyway, so will ask them to get it working before I buy it.

Should be the same on both model RRS G4 vehicles I believe!

So would you not recommend fitting an LPG kit to a 4.4 V8 then?

I think that may be the case but will ask them to get it sorted.

It comes with all the kit, so providing they get the ACC sorted I will probably go for it! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

I wouldn't recommend fitting LPG no. Unless I was doing more than say 15k miles a year I don't think the payback and potential problems it can cause is worth it.

I noticed from the photo that it's missing the winch rope, I believe Rufftracks sell them at a discount to G4 club members. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Cheers Mike. They do have the winch rope I believe, still in it's original packaging and never been used!

The owner is taking it to the local dealer today to have the ACC investigated, hopefully it is a case of reconnecting it and hey-presto! - Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE G4 Challenge vehicle (FOR SALE)

Ok so the owner took the G4 RRS into the LR dealer today and it seems the ACC control module is there but the radar bit is not, apparently because the winch interferes with the mounting bracket.

The dealer is going to see if the cruise control can be activated without the active part, not sure if this will work or not?

If not a radar sensor is around £40-£50 from a breakers yard I'm told? The control module is the expensive bit and that is present.

The current owner was charged £170 for this and understandably is not willing to spend any more on this, which I can understand having owned the car happily without it working for the past 6 years!

So, what do u reckon guys - should getting a £50 sensor sort this out or could it work as standard cruise control without the active element? Obviously I'd prefer the active bit to work ideally!!
