Power loss? 2006 TDV6 HSE

Hi guys, had an issue this morning and thought I would ask here before picking up the phone to the local dealers.

Was in the car with dad, who was driving. Started the car and everything was ok, no warning lights or error messages.

Reversing out the drive the car felt sluggish, almost like the brakes were still on. Carried on like this for our 5 min trip to work. Changing gear fine, no warning lights or anything....just felt "tight"

Got to work and had a quick look round, nothing to see really. Did see this in the 4x4 info screen....a flashing red light above one of the tyres.

Unfortunately I have taken the manual in to my new house so don't have it to hand. Does anyone know what this could be or have any ideas on the problem before I call LR?

Many thanks Smile Sag LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Might be an EGR failure..power loss below 2k rpms is usual symptoms.

(You do not get a warning light on the dash with the older cars)

Ref the display red icon: The sensor on the suspension is throwing a wobbly and will pribably clear itself.... if not you will eventually get a HDC error. RRS gone

If it does turn out to be EGR(s) then as a pre 2007 car, you can fit an EGR blank off kit (£12 off ebay for the kit) and 3 hours of a mechanic's time.

Another method is disconnecting the EGR feed pipes that enter the top of the intake manifold (top of engine in the middle, just under the plastic cover) and crimp the square section flat then re-connect... this stops the hot gasses entering the intake and problem solved... The 2nd method is way faster (30 mins) and no kit required, just a screwdriver, spanner and a heavy hammer!... the 1st method is fully reversible though if you ever wanted to re-fit the EGRs RRS gone

In that case, I hope it turns out to be an EGR issue as they seem like relatively quick and low cost fixes.

Is there any way of checking this is the issue before it goes on or is loss of power the only symptom? LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Yes there is a way

Remove the black plastic engine cover
In the centre of the engine you will see a square block with 2 pipes entering from left and right
The mesh on these pipes just flicks off with a screwdriver
You can then detach the pipe from the block at the top with a spanner

Once they are both disconnected, get a handy helper to start the engine, let it run for 10 seconds then switch off, with an ear close to the pipe exits, listen for a swish swish sound from both pipes....

This is the EGR's self cleaning, if no swish swish from a pipe, then it's a seazed EGR hence faulty. Thumbs Up

While it's apart just crimp the pipe end (where it's square) and job done... power! RRS gone

I had the same issues as you on my 2006 tdv6 last year, and blocking the EGR valves remedied it - in fact the car drove brilliantly after it. I bought the kit from Bells for about £48 and it took me 2 hours to fit it.

I don't think you'll get a main dealer to fit a blanking kit, as they'd far rather sell you the replacement valve for £600

Thanks guys this is great info.

I'm in two minds about sending it to LR now. I know it's under warranty but I may be better off letting a local LR specialist look at it and hopefully do the fix in a couple of hours as opposed to waiting a week

Are these the badboys I would need?

Yep that's the kit Thumbs Up

Remember the EGR's are at the bottom of the engine so quite fiddly to do this so find a garage who know what's involved (otherwize the fee's will mount!) RRS gone

Thanks awd man, your help has been gold thus far buddy!

I have just ordered the kit with next day delivery so fingers crossed its here by Saturday. there seems to be 2/3 fitting guide's floating about and I'd like to think I am handy with a spanner so may give it a shot over the weekend.

Worst case scenario, it is still booked in at LR so will let them see it if the problem persists. LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.
