2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black
a bit annoyed - opinions please?

I dropped the car off locally and got a call that one of the front tyres was "down to the cord" and less than 2mm tread left, so it would be necessary to put the space saver on to road test. A bit strange I thought, because I'd only checked the tyres a few weeks ago and certainly the amount of wear to get to the cord and require the spare sounds quite dramatic.

I drive the car 'enthusiastically' and enjoy roundabouts so I'm well used to the wear pattern that Conti's and GYs both show (less so on Toyos I find?) but such wear does not make the tyre illegal and is far from being dangerous enough to warrant changing for the spare.

So I acknowledged the observation and politely decline the offer of a new tyre/pair of tyres.

The car is returned to me still with the space saver in place. Wow, I think, it must be dangerous - they've had to keep the spare on for the drive back to me (only a few miles).

I then decided to take a look at my worn-to-the-cord, only-2mm-tread tyre...

what do you think?

I'm not sure what has annoyed me more. The fact I nearly paid for a tyre when there is clearly a few k left in this one (and something a risk averse person would have done, when the wear was described the way it was), or the fact I just wasted half an hour putting the wheel back on (and putting the spare back inc RLD protector).

any thoughts?

Idiots........BMW used to do this to me all the time....."it's dangerous, I wouldn't even drive it out of the garage"............despicable sales tactics.

Bit theatrical to actually change to your space saver (unless you paid for the labour while they were doing it Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes )

Put a bit more air in your tyres if you like throwing around roundabouts, it helps it not scrubbing your tyres off so much, i would of taken it back to them and asked them to put your original wheel back on and given them your tyre depth readings. Shocked

UPDATE - I am now informed that the reason the space saver was on when the car returned is because the technician considered my tyre non-safe to drive with

Personally I'd think driving with one 70% worn 20" & one 1% worn 19" on the front is significantly less safe as far as braking from speed is concerned...

Send an email with a link to here to the service manager to see what he or she might have to say about it, and I think they need to change your tyres back for free after the hassle and embarrassment it has clearly caused you. MY10 HSE 3.0 TDV6 : Santorini Black : Ebony Interior w/Anigre wood : Privacy Glass (total) : Sunroof : Sidesteps : Hybrid TV : Detachable Tow Kit : Spare Wheel Cover : 22" Dished Supersports

What's the name of this establishment? I want to know so that I can avoid it as their "technicians" (aka otherwise-unemployable idiots) apparently have no idea what a tyre is, let alone a safe one! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

A well worded letter/email to the manager should fix things, especially when you tell them your writing to watchdog aswell lol

You should be very, very annoyed indeed. Don't go back to the same garage again all they are doing is to try to rip you off! Funny how they still call themselves technicians...
