Disco 2 v RRS?

Hi folks, newbie question so please bear with us!

I have owned Land Rovers for 12 years now, moving from a LR 90 to a Defender 110, and finally to a Discovery 2. In short, I have owned cars that are not famed for their modest fuel economy!

I am now considering purchasing a TDV 6 Sport, diesel, from the 2006/2007 era. I know that fuel economy can be a contentious topic but has anybody here owned a Discovery 2 (TD5) and can let me know whether there is much of a difference between the two vehicles in terms of fuel economy and, if possible, with regard to general ongoing servicing and maintenance costs?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks
T

I had a Disco 2 TD5 and upgraded to an RRS.

The RRS was far more economical than the TD5

My recent purchase, a RRS 2.7 does 25 round town and 32 on a motorway run, my mate had a TD5 Manual and he got a bit less.... I also tow a 1500kg caravan, yet to try it but would be happy with 20mpg...... My last car did the same as my RRS. It was a 3.0 V6 CRD 300c Touring. Just glad to get 4WD, the 300c was rubbish even on wet grass!

I get about 15mpg in my TDV8 when driving it properly, it will cruise @ 75mph doing 28mpg on the motorway

if driven gently I get about 21mpg around town

add 10% for TDV8 vs TDV6?

Thumbs Up ============
2010 TDV8 HSE - ooo laa laaaaaaaaa
2007 TDV8 HSE - superb car and very reliable
============
2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!

He's just told me the TDV6 does 4mpg more than the TD5

The service interval is 5k longer too? (at 15k not 10k)

Quieter

Had 2 Discovery 2's before RRS Thumbs Up

RRS definitely more economical, quieter and more comfortable Very Happy

Downside the Disco was cavernous compared to RRS and RRS is a lot dearer and less reliable Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

I made this change but to a TDV8

I'd say around town, the manual TD5 was about the same at 21/22mpg if driven gently

On a run, I get about 27/28 mpg in the RRS which is simliar to the TD5

I know which one I prefer to sit in - the td5 felt positively agricultural compared to the RRS

Guernsey 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue

My 2 TD5 autos returned 27 mpg each over the 5 years i had them.

RRS returned 22mpg over 3 year period.

The RRS is worse on short journeys and in cold conditions on avergae about 10 percent worse in winter than summer though once again coupled with short journeys did bring mine down to sub 20's.

As said before less room than TD5, but the main handicap is the sloping back which means you have to be lot more organised if packing up for a trip as all the large bulky items need to be placed in first. The one biig thing I enjoyed/ noticed was the much better turning circle on the RRS.

The paint is a lot softer on the RRS and will scratch and mark as soon as you look at it even more so dark colours.
If you like to keep it looking good it can be a thankless task unless you shell out for a good detailing or kit to do it yourself.

All in all you will find it a much better and refined vehicle to your present ride and still be able to go round with a huge grin on your face Now driving a rather smart looking Van

My 2.7 does 27.5 mpg on short runs between towns(never above 40 mph), and low thirtys at sensible motorway speeds.

Thanks for the advice folks. I am not so concerned about the reduced space as the space in my Disco seems a bit excessive for me at the moment. The fuel economy seems much of a muchness, and ride quality will undoubtedly be a huge improvement with the RRS. My major concern is about reliability and the "significantly dearer" comment above....gulp! I have been pretty lucky with my Disco because apart from the annual service, not much has really gone wrong. I will certainly take out a warranty but I appreciate that these have their limits (and I do not want to provoke another warranty thread here!). As a legal beagle myself, the "wear and tear" provision in many warranties sounds to be an absolute get out of jail provision for the warranty company. How can one possibly argue in the case of any used vehicle over, say, 50,000 miles, that a component failure is not due to wear and tear?

Ok, I will shut up now, thanks all again!

I had a TD5 ES auto disco from new, I now run a 2.7 RR Sport, and yes the Sport is more economical by circa 4mpg.

Around town, well both crap Big Cry In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.
