4.2 or tdv8?

Hello All! Im looking at purchasing one of the above in the not too distant future, with diesel on the rise is petrol the better option? out of the 2 above which produces the better mpg? Im asking on here as its better to find out from owners rather than stats from a book!!!!

mpg the TDV8 will out perform the petrol by 5mpg (with similar driving styles)

The petrol is quicker obviously

but the V8 diesel is a great engine and are generally £5k more for a similar age/mileage vehicle

I chose the diesel because it's plenty quick enough to give you a grin, plus is able to pass petrol stations without you glancing at the fuel gauge Rolling with laughter RRS gone

The TDV8 will give better mpg. But if the best mpg is your aim then you'd be better off with TDV6.

But driven enthusiatically, none of them give brilliant mpg. You don't get them for their fuel economy though... Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

idealy it would be a tdv8 but if they are on a par (4.2 and 3.6) ive driven a 2.7 but thought it felt under powered?? ive seen a ice white 4.2 on autotrader! but liking either the black or stonaway grey....

The 2.7 is perfectly OK but you do drive it at 75% most of the time (if you're not a Sunday driver Mr. Green )

The diesel V8 has more torque than it's V6 sister, making it more of an effortless drive, with respectable performance if you want to use it.

The supercharged 4.2 is obviously the flagship and has the performance to match the badge

As a rule of thumb the TDV6 will do high 400's on a tank, the TDV8 will muster high 300's to low 400's and the sc mid to high 200's (This is for over a £100 worth of fuel remember..hence the reason LR released the TDV8 to try and bridge the gap between the quick sc and the ecconomical V6)

Obviously these figures will vary according to driving style and type of road... with motorways returning pretty good mpg for all of them (relatively) RRS gone

For me the question would be how many miles will you be doing iin a year and how many years do you think you will keep the car?

If low to either question then I would go supercharged & if the budget could be stretched go for 5.0 rather than 4.2 - not just for the engine but the other improvements that come with a MY10 onwards.

I have a TDV6 3.0 and I test drove a TDV8. I really like my 3.0... If I were in the UK I would've got a remap and then the TDV8 would be left behind... Mr. Green

True... As long as the hose from the gas station is still connected to the TDV8 I might be in trouble... Whistle RRS 2010 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black

thanks for the replies! i would say roughly around 12k a year the wife will use it daily to do around 40 50 miles motorway driving. Im afraid the budget wont strech to a MY10! wish it would!!1

40-50 miles a day

You're into TDV8 territory

Otherwise you'll have the wife on your back to fill it up for her twice a week

If it's just the wife driving it up and down the motorway, get a 2.7V6 and save a few quid on purchase and running costs. It may be that a suitable remap on a 2.7 would give you enough "go" when you drive it whilst potentially giving her slightly better mileage figures on the work run too (assuming she doesn't drive enthusiatically). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
