England 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black
Off Road RRS

Just getting ready for half a days off roading in a RRS up at Rockingham Castle, at the Land Rover Experience Centre there.

We took a Freelander 2 round the centre at Luton Hoo when we bought Mrs Jim's car last year and had a good time. So hopefully this will be as good if not better.

I'll take some photo's and post later on.

Jim

They're great days aren't they. I took a 300 mile MY12 RRS out at Luton Hoo in December, fantastic fun, amazingly capable too on M&S tyres.

Enjoy your day Jim. Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Ooh, looking forward to hearing how you get on and seeing the pictures.

I'm looking at doing either a half or full day either at Rockingham or at Luton as they're my closest venues. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Can't comment on Rockingham, but Luton Hoo was very good.
Not sure if I'd do a full day, depends how many of you are driving I suppose. I found 2.5hrs with two of use just fine Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

That's interesting. I had thought of doing 'sole occupancy' for a day. Perhaps a half day would be better then?

I shall await Jim's report Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The courses aren't massive so you end up going around them quite a few times (not that that's a bad thing).

I suppose it depends what you are trying to get out of it.
For me, it was a 'get to know my RRS' type of thing and help the wife when she used it in the snow.
If you're looking to do this as a pre-curser to some green lane'ing, then maybe a day is a good idea Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

It's more of a "get to know the capabilities" thing for me really.

It would also be useful to have a bit of understanding for the times when I might need to go off the tarmac, e.g. for shooting, so that I don't end up looking a total numpty Rolling with laughter

I note that Eastnor do "drive your own vehicle" days which I quite fancy. Having instructors around who can advise and extract would be good as would actually using my own RRS.

I know the car is hugely capable - I just want to be able to say "been there and done a little bit of that" I guess Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I'd say half a day on your own then would be ample Thumbs Up
Not sure I'd do it in my own car mind, Mrs bean managed to get VERY close to a tree in a rutted area and there was some definite shrub contact on another part. Laughing
I was truly amazed at exactly how capable they are though. Shocked ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

England 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 SE Siberian Silver

My wife and I did the Luton Hoo LRE yesterday afternoon in MY12 RRS.
Amazing vehicle on 19" road tyres, over slippery mud, rocks, thru water and round and over the wet concrete bowl.
A few photos in my gallery, of the wheel wash by the mill. Laughing
Unfortuantely we did not get to go in the woods as they were keeping it tidy for a training course.

I have done Rockingham Castle in the Disco 2 in 2003, Disco3 in 2006 and Freelander 2 in 2007.
Its great fun playing in the castle quarry, the entry and exit via the "Wall" is butt clenching!

@ SS - shame you didn't go in the woods, but still a great place, 'the bowl' and 'pilots view' were particular favourites of ours. We drove that car a few days after they took delivery. The e-diff is very clever, although not something I'd spec on my own car Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Galway Green

I found Luton Hoo very sterile. Not helped that it hadn't been open long and wasn't wet or muddy, mostly just concrete. The old South East centre was much better. I did go through the woods but only a small section of it.

I'm not sure where you would go on a full day!

Getting a Land Rover Experience voucher seems much better than booking direct. Apart from being free the LRE vouchers are always sole occupancy (unless you take someone else along yourself). When you book and pay with the centre they try and fill the car up. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

@bc74, There were 2x Discos, 2x RRS, 1x defender and 1x Evoque together playing on the site, so it was rather busy!
Pilot's view was quite rutted, the Evoque levelled the middle, and coming down grounded the front of the RRS!
We did drive over the largest hump of the bowl to put the bonnet into the water, and coming out put us at quite an angle, front to back and side to side!
The instructor had a refusal going up the rocks, but succeeded on his second attempt. On our goes we just went straight up!

@RM, I can imagine it was not as much fun in dry conditions. I understand what you mean by sterile, compared to Rockingham, Luton Hoo is managed and artificial. Having done Rockingham Castle both wet and dry,it's defeinitely better wet, with the car sliding and systems working harder you really appreciate the capabilities of LRs.
