On the issue of elderley drivers. I have been the victim of an incident caused by a driver in his late 70's that clearly was not fit to drive. His ability to react quickly, his ability to process the situation that was occurring and his general lack of awareness all ended up with him crashing into me head on, despite the fact that I had seen him coming and managed to get my car almost completely off of the road! I then not only had the trauma of the actual impact but also of trying to rescue him his wife & his daughter from their overturned vehicle as it was spilling fuel everywhere! The most difficult part was getting to him so I could pull the keys from the ignition as he was frozen in place with his foot still hard on the accelerator with wheels spinning and sparks everywhere!! When eventually the Police, Fire and Ambulance arrived I was able to sit down on the ground at which point I started to shake and cry uncontrollably. I would never wish to see anyone go through what I did that day and although I accept that there are bad drivers at all ages it still makes perfect sense to me that when we reach a certain age, or maybe even if a medical professional that deals with us, feels that we may not be safe to drive, that we should have to pass some kind of test to retain our right to drive. I don't think that this should actually be age limited and could be applied at any age for a multitude of reasons but as a minimum we should have to prove our competancy again once our original licence expires in our 70's before it is renewed. As an aside, the Police reported back to me that the man that crashed into me had told them that he had been drawn to my car because it was so shiney!! (well it was only 2 weeks old )They also commented that the evidence pointed to him having panicked and pressing the accelerator rather than the brake. The court decided that if he surrendered his licence permenantly they would not pursue the case against him. I was happy enough with this as I had no desire to see the old fella dragged through court but at least he was off the road. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

I don't mean when they get to 70 their car is crushed and they're banned, but every 6 months to a year they should get tested to see if they're fit to drive. if in busy time would of made that mistake due to seeing other traffic movements. |

the stats don't lie - per mile driven, the over 65s are the most dangerous age group of driver. Because the young drive so much more in terms of miles, and because there are so many more of them driving, the actual number of accidents they cause is greater. cue the stats-can-tell-you-anything plonkers, sorry, brigade ============ 2010 TDV8 HSE - ooo laa laaaaaaaaa 2007 TDV8 HSE - superb car and very reliable ============ 2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8! |
