Parking brake stripped and cleaned?

Got my car in for its 1st service today and they just rang to see if I want my parking brake stripped and cleaned for an extra £89.....

Do I ?

I said no.

What is this for? Is it really necessary?

Surely a service is just that, if it needs doing they should do it as part of the service. Clearly not a big job for them if it's only £89 (given the usual higher dealer rates). I'd have said no to be honest too.

I believe that the electric parking brakes have been known to cause problems by crushing any mud/stones that may have built up in there, causing problems with the motors that operate them. I recall the guy on my LR Experience day telling me that they don't use the parking brake (just leave it in park) as they had had a few fail after a days off roading Exclamation ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I'd tell them politely that yes I would like it doing but for nothing if they think it is necessary. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

My Brother in law just had his handbreak fail on him!!

It got stuck on and after a 5hr wait for the RAC (last weekend in the snow) they managed to release it for him. He drove home with red light flashing on the dashboard and some fault codes.
Took it in to main stealer they wanted £400 for a new electric motor Big Cry Big Cry Cheers Laurence.

I said "do I need it doing?"

They said "not really, but i'd definitely get it done next time" Laughing

If I get it done next time then at least its only £44.50 per service extra

Do it yourself.

If they're doing it properly, they need to take the Disk off.

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

I had my handbrake (EPB) module replaced under warranty at 57k, after being quoted £400+ for a replacement. 10 RRS HSE TDV8 --- No complaints so far
57 RRS HSE TDV8 --- Great Car. Heated Windscreen & Brake Module both replaced under warranty.
10 months great driving, before I couldn't do without the new interior
