Tyres and spare question

Collected my TDV6 RRS 3.0 on Friday, absolutely delighted with it – but one question re tyres, please.

The 4 on the car are 20” diameter with 275/40/20 tyres, but the spare is a 19” with 175/80/19 tyre – the dealer says this is standard as the rolling radius of the spare is very close to that of the main four wheels, but I’d have expected the 5 to be identical.

Anyone actually used a spare akin to this to confirm all is well, please?

Many thanks,
Stuart

Yes, daft as it sounds, that's correct. Thumbs Up
On my new MY12 RRS, I have 20" wheels on the car and a 19" wheel spare.

You can if you choose to, buy a similar spare 20" and store it in the same place, instead of the current 19", but it will protrude slightly under the car a little more and change your 'exit angles' should you choose to put it through its paces a little off road.

Eh? That 80 profile looks wrong to me.

a 175/80 R19 has a diameter 35mm larger than that of a 275/40 R20. Its rolling radius is almost 5% out.

A 175/70 R19 would be an exact match for the rolling radius. RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

Just had a look under mine to save beancounter getting dirty Very Happy and the 80 profile seems correct
My tyres are 275/40 R20 Contis on the car and a rubbish 175/80 R19 space saver thing underneath.
I keep meaning to treat myself to a full size spare, I wanted one when I ordered the car but was told this is no longer an option, not sure if I beleive that.
If you still want a full size spare Stuart, ebay is a good option. 12MY RRS Orkney Grey HSE Lux

Excellent speedy responses, thank you all – agree with Mr Chesterfield’s view that while the spare wheel and tyre look pretty robust (unlike a spacesaver), the rolling radius appears to be 3.5 cms. too big, so have asked the dealer to clarify – will let you know their view. Presumably the air suspension wouldn’t compensate for one bigger wheel?

Great forum, as good as the RRS !

I would have thought the larger rolling radius would have played havoc with the traction control systems as one wheel would have been rotating at a faster rate than the other in all sorts of conditions.

Maybe the pressure or sidewall strength on the spare are lower and allow for more compression, therefore equalling the rolling radius out?

I know after looking at getting a set of winter wheels and tyres, the specification in the handbook shows a differing profile for winter tyres, Im assuming more compression in the rubber counteracts the extra profile height. RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

That clever stuff is all beyond me but the sidewall of the spare states "INFLATE TO 60 psi"
So perhaps that solves the equation Confused

Are you sure that the wording does not include the word maximum as in don't inflate any higher than this?

Good advice and I have mine on the full size alloy.
C'ant really understand why they nick the space savers unless they sell them to the V.W. van owners??
