I'm new on the site and haven't acquired a Land Rover, Range Rover Sport just yet.

I am looking (or rather was looking depending on advice) to buy a 2005 model Range Rover Sport TDV6 2.7 litre diesel. The reason behind my choice for the 2005 model was due to the road tax price increase on the newer models. My understanding is that the road tax goes up from £260 to £445/460 when you go above 2005.

However, the more I look the more appealing the newer models look. I also believe the road fund license change is influencing the second hand values of the older RRS. For a little more money (and I'm quite surprised to find that the difference between an 05 and an 08 model can be little more that 2 grand!)

I could be driving the 3.6 litre TDV8 instead of the 2.7 or 3.0 TDV6 and the vehicle would be a few years younger too, maybe a 2007/8 model.

My original budget was going to be between £15,000 (or as low as possible for something decent) to just under the 20 mark for the right car. But as I've said, for a few thousand more I could have the V8.

Could the kind people at RRSPORT advise me as to whether it would be wiser financially to buy the 2005 TDV6 or the newer TDV8?

What sort of running costs would I be looking at for each?
I.E. ... Road tax, MPG, difference in insurance premiums, servicing, any hidden costs in either model.

Any other advice regarding any problems to look out for, what toys the vehicle should come with, best wheel and tyre sizes/combination and recommendations on dealer versus private sale would be greatly appreciated.

I currently drive an Audi A6, 3.0 litre, V6 turbo diesel, Quattro, Tiptronic and want a diesel model RRS as I travel a lot of motorway miles. (The Audi is only 5 years old and is about to go over the 100K mile mark.)

Coming from a 3.0L TDI Audi the 2.7 will feel sluggish

The TDV8's better but will still not be as rapid/nimble (We're talking about 2.7 tonnes)

That aside... the extra £200 per year to tax a post March 2006 car (you may find some 06 cars "old enough" to qualify for the cheaper rate so it's not just 05 & 55 plates) isn't really a big deal compared to the running costs of theses cars!

MPG 2.7 TDV6 27-30
3.6 TDV8 22-26

There can be an overlap depending on driving style and nature of routes so mpg isn't really a big deal breaker.

Insurance, I'm 40 and pay £450odd for the TDV8, cannot comment on the V6

Servicing the V8 is slightly more.

If I re-set my mpg at the begining of a motorway journey I will see 28+MPG as long as I do not cane it (less than 80mph and no sudden accelerations)... it's cold starts that really chews the diesel on these cars...taking 10miles for the range to recover the 50 miles it's looses in the 1st mile covered! RRS gone

Hi mate,

I would highly recommend you test drive both the TDV6 and TDV8 to help make your mind up.

As regards some of the models you listed, I doubt you will get a 3.0 SDV6 as these are fairly new cars and start at about £34k+

Your options are probably 2.7TDV6 (approx. 28mpg) £18k+ or 3.6TDV8 (approx. 25mpg) £25k+ Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

I'd be surprised if you would pick up a normal miles TDV8 for 20k plus a few grand , book price on early model 56 plate is 25775 retail. You also have zero chance of picking up a 3.0 TDV6 for under 35k.

If you can handle the fuel costs consider a S/C plenty deals to be done on early 05/06 cars for under 20k and they are really well spec'd I to would suggest you will fee the 2.7 TDV6 a little under powered.

Website doesn't say which year it is but that does sound a few grand cheaper than it should be if its is an 07 plate as you say...... trade figure on an 07 with 60k miles is 24125i so that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

The rrs is not really a vehicle to be driven if you are concerned about mph/budget. They are quite expensive to run, mph servicing etc. My sc probably cost the same as a small house with a mortgage to run. But

Hello mate, I was you four months ago!

I have a fantastic 2005 plate TDV6 HSE. It's a superb car. Do your homework, get it inspected and then enjoy it.

The (one) advantage to not getting a warranty with your purchase is that you are free to carefully modify it. A remap and some 20" summer wheels for starters.

I have no doubt that the newer cars are more modern but read this forum and you'll also see that they share many of the issues and problems that a 7 year old car can have.

I love my TDV6 and I've had some decent (and not so...) cars n my time.

Go for it. You'll find some good ones for well under £20K, I know because I did.

Sort out the boys from the men and you'll be enjoying the acceleration of a two and half ton car from 40 to 70 in a manner that few cars will deliver.

Have I been enthusiastic enough?

Oh, and one last thing. You get addicted to this forum where we should all really know better and get out more.... 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE in Artic Frost. 20" 2010 HST Alloys, sidesteps, Hawke tips, plus minor bits and bobs along with a remap. I'm totally overwhelmed by the response you lads have given me. I thought it might have taken a couple of days to get a reply or two, but I think I counted 11 replies in a matter of hours.

I wasn't trying to open a tin of worms with the prices and I may have made an honest mistake with the 3 litre comment. That car was listed as a 3 litre TDV6 and not an "S" guess it must have been a typo on the sellers part.

At the moment I've been looking on eBay, Autotrader, Gumtree, Pistonheads and doing the odd Google search.

I've heard the Range Rover Sport is meant to be one of the most comfortable cars you can get, also I like the idea of having a good chunk of metal wrapped around should the worst ever happen.

And, yes I know what it's like to have a hungry heavy beast...No, I'm not talking about the ex girlfriend!
I've just sold my Vauxhall Omega estate and that had a 2.2 litre petrol engine mated to a 4, yes 4 speed auto box. The computer would tell me I was getting 7.1 MPG as I was pulling away from the drive. That car was around the 2 tonne mark and my current A6 is around the same, although the V6, turbo and 6 speed auto box make a heck of a difference.

I can take the hit with running costs as the Omega returned around 18 to 24 MPG overall, but I don't want to be throwing the pennies away unnecessarily. From reading the replies I've had I think I'll lean towards the 2.7, V6 although I really do like the look of the newer 3.6, V8 interior.

Thanks for the advice and I will definitely be taking both cars...TDV6 and TDV8... out for a spin.

There is one other question I'd like to pose...
Has the threat of bad weather and possible return of last years snow had an effect on current used prices? The values appear to be creeping up at the moment. If this is the case, is there a good time of year to buy in? The Audi is pretty sure footed and has decent rubber on for the winter. Would it be wise to wait before I put my hand in my pocket?

I know you only live once and that's why I want to get the RRS, but with the prices varying so much (and you only get to spend your hard earned pennies once too) I figured that the right buy could save me enough to put a new Omega Seamaster on my wrist for the same money as I could spend by being a bit gung-ho and getting carried away by a smooth talking salesman.

Whoever coined the phrase, "boys and their toys" wasn't wrong!

Please keep offering words of wisdom and pointing me in the right direction.

winter weather always has an effect on the prices mate, last year most cars rose in price by between 2-3k.

Not many price increases to date as the snow hasnt hit yet but over the last 2 months there have been minimal monthly depreciation , which on a vehicle that looses between 500-1000 per month that good news enough.

In early November dealers started to harvest up good RRS stock for retailing over the winter period which saw a significant rise in auction prices, i suspect there is still deals to be done out there but id move quickly before any incerase in figures.
